Could they be usefully today with all the 4th and 5th generation type fighters? If I recall correctly, the Air Force at one time considered them for a fighter / interceptor role. Is that correct?

According to wiki, there were prototype interceptor versions.

Such a beautiful aircraft. After all these years, it still looks like the future.
