I saw an interesting article a day or so ago on Yahoo, and forgot to post it here, with a link, so here it is:

Apparently, authorities are a bit worried about a major solar flare from the sun hitting the Earth, and wiping out 1/3rd of our electric grid, causing 100+ million, or so to be without power for years.

If it is anything like the events of 1859, and 1921, apparently, we'd be in serious trouble.

It appears that some authorities are attempting to play down the severity of the issue, since the recommended preparation should a big flare head our way is to unplug electronic equipment from your power outlets.

As mentioned in the article, it fails to provide any concrete suggestions on how to survive for years without electricity, working ATM machines, fresh water and sanitation, or regular food deliveries.

So, for you post-apocalyptic gamers, looks like you have another scenario to kick off your games.

Should make the Global Warming people happy.

Until it happens and they are sitting in the dark with no internet. grin

It'll be as bad as the 2011 Rapture AND the 2012 end of the Mayan calendar combined!

I'm gonna make a fortune in tin cans and string communication :)

Then again, it could charge up the Ley Lines and Magic becomes available.

I'd be as worried about other nations. Consider the loss of security around Russian, Indian or Pakistani nuke storage, various other military sites, nuclear plants, and other such locations.

This is a concern, especially given some of the large flares thrown off earlier this year. Luckily, none came directly our way, of any significance.

I'm more worried about our enemies bringing the grid down, through their efforts.

On the other hand it might be as bad as the "Home before the Leaves Fall" war of 1914.

Any idea if it will have an impact on modern vehicles? It might be wise to invest in that Honda 600 two-door I've always had my eye on.
