Couldn't resist this. Armand (in Argentina) will still be sound asleep. I'll beat him him to this.

The sun rises earlier over here, as the Earth rotates.

Seems that, even though there was not a single Bavarian unit at the only battle that really matters (or at least not in their national rig), Perrys are still adding to their range.

There is a collection of weirdos that finds their work hard to paint (different topic and I do know what they mean) but, anatomically…usually…..excepting the odd Hobbits….you cannot beat them. Unless…where was I?

Oh yes. Caissons, six horses, four horses, with and without guns etc etc……

What more could you ask?

In all seriousness. Incredible that folk will tackle "fringe subjects" like this. How lucky are we these days?

Remember the days when Napoleonics was a dead subject? I do……

(Oh "beggar", "Flipping forum"…or nearly that…I cannot cross post. I love technology, me)

The only battle that really matters? Really Bavarians have been in quite a few battles. I can think of 5 Napoleonic at least from 1809-1814. Sadly the names elude me tonight. The Bavarians had the third largest German contingent in 1815, assuming one counts Austria as being such back then. Admittedly Bavarians did a lot of marching and skirmishing occasionally in that final year but along with the Wurttemberg/Hesse-Darmstadt & a small Austrian contingent, provides a force viable for 1815 campaign without the Netherlands and Brits being involved in the same way in ahistorical games. In my honest opinion not entirely redundant in that last Napoleonic year. The cavalry and infantry have a greater variety of different uniforms in 1815. A welcome colourful ally if painting legions of Austrians, with only a cuirassier, gardes du corps and 2 hussar regiments redundant in previous Bavarian armies of the Napoleonic Wars. The infantry come in 5 flavours in 1815, only 2 in 1809 and 4 in 1813. If one wanted an exciting, unusual Napoleonic army to a historical order of battle, the 1815 Bavarians give one quite a range of units not seen outside of a coalition Reserve Corps. 46,000 infantry, 4 divisions, a 12pdr and 6pdr battery each, a guard brigade similar in scope to middle and young guard amongst the French, with the 5th 12pdr. 8,000 cav in 2 cavalry divisions, green Chevauleger, light blue hussars a horse artillery coy each and a guard brigade of garde du corps in brass armour, cuirassier in steel and Austrian style uhlans, an artillery reserve of 5 batteries. Some 57,000 men and 118 artillery pieces, 14 of 8 guns, 1 of 6. 6 12pdrs 6 6pdr foot, 2 6pdr horse and 1 10pdr howitzer. Takes three 1815 French Corps to match and the Bavarians gain with numbers what they lose with command control flexibility. Do it properly and one adds that Wurttemberger-led Corps along with Dokhturov's Russian Right Column and you outnumber Napoleon whilst facing several potentially defensible river positions instead of bog standard Netherlands-based games that surprise few opponents with scenario design.

Brilliant……..quite brilliant. I freely admit that I tend to think 1815 never got beyond Lower Belgium, but I might just stretch it to Murat in Italy. I have heard of the odd "skirmish" across the southern border with "Germany"….but that is it. "The only battle" I might concede as including Wavre, Ligny and QB. The rest were preludes (only kidding)

I am a sucker for the Bavarian infantry shade of blue (if one can capture it) and, in an updated rig for 1815….fascinating for a counterfactual wargame. You have not actually committed yourself to which side of the field they might have stood in 1815, given half a chance. Bit like the Saxons really?

Many may know this. I did not, imagining Bavaria (like Saxony, Westphalia, Hesse Darmstadt, Lippe, Wurtemberg, Reuss, Anhalt, Oldenburg, Baden…oh you get the idea) just got absorbed and they all wore Prussian dark blue or Austrian white by 1815. Green would be odd, as Russia is a bit remote. Funny thing, this thread is running in parallel as I type and stops before 1815 for Bavaria. Not just me then.

Got any pics of Bavarians around 1815? Great response!

visit Napoleon-online.de go to the picture gallery and you will find under paintings Bavarian troops parading in 1815 – they kept their blue tunics – but all regiments did wear red facings.

The colours did not all go Prussian blue that quickly. In 1840 the Bavarians were still in cornflower blue, the Nassauers and Saxon line in dark green, Hannoverians and Saxon Guard in red, Ruess in white and so on. In fact I believe that the Saxon regiments absorbed by the Prussians in 1815 were still in white when they mutinied and got sent home.

"Armand (in Argentina) will still be sound asleep. I'll beat him him to this."

Generally speaking, I'm greatly in favor of this, save for the fact that the mere mention of that name puts me in hives.

(I am happy to be Doghoused for this, by the way. Totally worth it.)

Tango01 most likley will pop up in a week with precisely the same topic and link as it ever happened so often in the past

Bless him.

It is the season of goodwill to all men. We must "bury the hatchet" (a phrase that is hard to translate) and not in Tango's head, either.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to him and all, (with 11 days to go I know!) Never too early………..

By the way…what marvellous site is Napoleon-online.de. Thanks for that. I can see a few orders going in post Christmas!

vW – your comment does you no favours in my eyes. Armand may occasionally copy a post, but often it is his I come across, so what is the issue to you?

Nice limbers by the way.
