Some time ago I asked the esteemed membership of The Miniatures Page to view my blog and assist with suggesting book titles as I started my Korean War projects. Now, after several months of honing and fine tuning, I've updated that post with some of the excellent suggestions I received. Take a look, and if you have more titles to offer, please list them as comments on the blog. link |

Do you know of any Chinese sources for the war? |

Hasting's book (I believe it was just titled The Korean War) is fantastic and includes interviews with several Chinese veterans from what I recall. |

Weasel, if you read the comments under that post, there is at least one person who calls Hastings' works lacking. wye – I do not…I can't even get a person from China to visit the blog, so finding a source in today's world, in English, I think is a difficult proposition. |

I'm no expert and the comments there doesn't seem to dig into what errors he makes. I'd be interested in seeing those. It IS an overview, covering a number of different topics, rather than delving into heavy detail on one specific thing. There's even quite a few gameable scenarios in there. Just my impressions from reading it but without having an in-depth knowledge of the period. |

Mahoney's Formidable Enemies is the closest I ever found to a Chinese source in English. Back in 83 or 84, I spent a very interesting couple hours listening to a Chinese general who commanded a division at Chipyonri. Sure wish I could find my notes from it. Here is the closest info I have ever found from the Chinese POV. Warning, it is heavy on the propaganda and most of the "facts" are very selectively picked. link Darryl, more than likely, the ChiComs have your blog blocked. |

I have Formidable Enemies, and I think it is a good work…goes a long way to breaking some of our preconceived notions about the North Koreans and Chinese. Cold Steel – those notes would be rather interesting to see. Maybe one day you will come across them and post them here. |

"Rangers In Korea" is a very detailed account of all the Ranger Companies raised to fight there. I cannot recall the author's name. Full TOEs are listed and illustrated in photographs of soldiers in formation with their weapons for squad, platoon and company. |

Are you only interested in US in Korea? There are some quite good British books on the subject. 1. The Edge of the Sword by Anthony Farrar-Hockley 2. A Distant Obligation (The British part in the Korean War Vol. 1) by Anthony Farrar-Hockley 3. The British Part in the Korean War: An Honourable Discharge vol. 2 by Anthony Farrar-Hockley 4. Glorious Glosters: A Short History of the Gloucestershire Regiment, 1945-70 by Tim Carew 5. To The Last Round: The Epic British Stand on the Imjin River, Korea 1951 by Andrew Salmon 6. Scorched Earth, Black Snow: The First Year of the Korean War by Andrew Salmon 7. British Soldiers of the Korean War: In their own Words by Stephen Kelly 8. Chinese Hordes and Human Waves: A Personal Perspective of the Korean War 1950-1953 by Brigadier Brian Parritt |

Here is the link for Rangers in Korea. link Jarrovian – Yes, at this time I am just focused on US Marines and Chinese for Chosin, although I probably will expand to North Koreans and Marines for Pusan as well. I do not know much about the war as it is, and trying to research the Commonwealth portion would probably add more books and figures than the wife could comprehend. |
