NATO intercepted 28 Russian aircraft in a single day, over the Baltics, on Monday:

The previous day, approximately half that number of aircraft were intercepted over the Baltics.

Looks like Russia is ramping up their sorties in inverse proportion to the falling value of the ruble.

Could definitely use some more 1/600th scale Russian bombers, for hypothetical engagements, e.g. Tu-95s, Backfires, etc.

Mako11,
What rules are you using for 1/600?

Lion in the Stars10 Dec 2014 2:38 p.m. PST

Air War C21 for me.

Mako1110 Dec 2014 9:53 p.m. PST

Yea, C21 for me as well, for larger battles.

Clash of Sabres is excellent for early Cold War era, and when you want a bit more detail for your games.

I was looking on-line at some of the Shapeways stuff (I never do that), and some of them look okay, but others are horrible, like the B-58 Hustler there (it doesn't look anything like a real one – cockpit and fuselage aren't anywhere near to being correct). The B-47 and Badger sculpts I saw there were pretty ugly too – looked like elementary school kids did the designs, since the aircraft shapes are all wrong, e.g. noses, and engine inlets, etc.

There's a pair of 1/700th scale Hustlers on eBay, which look superb, in frosted detail. The shape is excellent, though as with all prints, they are a bit rough, in the frosted detail material.

I'm hoping the guy selling them owns the 3-D art, and might be able to rescale it to 1/600th for me.

Desperation takes hold, apparently, since no one is making early Cold War jets, sadly, in metal, in 1/600th scale.

Might need to consider bumping up to 1/300th scale for some Cold War battles, but the big bombers get really large, then.

Even Canada is now encountering flights of Russian bombers near its borders…

Tango, we've been having to deal with the ruskies for years, it's nothing new.

"The European Leadership Network, a London-based think tank, has produced a detailed study of this more assertive Russian activity. Entitled Dangerous Brinkmanship: Close Military Encounters Between Russia and the West in 2014, it chronicles almost 40 specific incidents that have occurred during the past eight months."

Got a reply on the B-58.

Sadly, they don't do 1/600th yet, but hopefully they will consider that in the future.

I suspect more people use 1/600th for gaming, than 1/700th scale minis, but could be wrong about that, I guess.

Tango0111 Dec 2014 3:39 p.m. PST

But … there is an increase in flights or not?

Yes, Armand.

For a while during the Cold War, they tapered off, but lately there's been a sharp spike in flights all around the globe, as Vlad attempts to show his power, and displeasure at sanctions imposed over the Russian invasion of Crimea, and current illegal occupation of it.

We've seen a resurgence of them off the USA, and Canada, if I recall correctly.

For example, apparently in Europe, there were only about 100 or so sorties by the Russkies in the last year, but 13 on Sunday, and 28 on Monday, apparently.

Thanks for the answer my friend.

How many Nato planes are flying/ intercepted near Russian borders/shores?

Barin112 Dec 2014 5:03 a.m. PST

Actually, some of the cases in Geoff's link are the cases where Russian planes were intercepting NATO spy planes ;)
Our press reports only something really big – like ships and subs.

Think someone will do something stupid and start shooting? I think the possibilities increase directly proportionally to the number of sorties – to make an obvious point. I wonder how well controlled those assets are?
