This is one of the series The Emerging Civil War. It is paperback, 159 pages. I'm quite pleased with it. While short it is well written. It is amazing just how much trouble Meade's attack caused. Once again, impassable terrain isn't so impassable when the other terrain is swept by shot and shell. The "impassable" terrain in AP Hill's line was vetted and approved by Jackson and Lee. Black and white illustrations, photos and some nice maps. Also has OB's of both armies. It includes driving directions if you take the book along to the field. Among the useful appendices is one about slavery at Fredericksburg, with numbers of free Blacks, slaves and a story by one slave who survived and found his freedom in the Union lines. That interested me since I have ancestors who were held in chattel slavery in Virginia. Also of interest, a blog site emergingcivilwar.com Among other things the newest entry demolishes my tale of Hood relying on laudanum at Franklin. It also says Forrest's threatening speech to Bragg may have been overly embellished. |
