Visited Wal-Mart yesterday, grocery shopping. Saw these tin globes, as tree ornaments, for a couple of bucks each, on the shelf. Thought I'd share them with interested persons here on TMP. They're tin (metal), they are made in two halves which easily come apart with a moderate twist/pull (could use one globe to make two half-planets/half-moons if you go for that approach, as opposed to full spheres). They are painted as ornaments, but they could easily be re-painted, as needed. The globes I looked at were between 4"-6" diameter. Another suggestion for gaseous planets: hobby/craft stores like Michael's and Hobby Lobby, sell clear glass ornaments for cheap, in the neighborhood of 3"-4" diameter. We came across some craft instructions which showed that you could create cheap ornaments by squirting different colors of craft paint inside the globes, then spin/shake, to swirl the paint inside -- let dry overnight. They looked like pretty good models of gaseous planets, or like what Gene Roddenberry used on his sets in the Star Trek -- TOS. ;-) Super-easy, inexpensive -- just be careful with them as they are made of delicate, thin glass!
