Hi all I'm starting a Black Powder army (really two – Brits and Contental) and I'm wondering how many bases you use for a 28mm unit. I was think five bases of four figures but a friend of mine suggested four bases of four. I'm using 40x40 bases. Looking forward to hear what everyone else is using. |

what i did was go for 4 or 5 for regular sized battalions 6 for large and 3 for small. it means that 2 small units can be combined to create large ones. I have Hessians and they run 5 companies which is how I came up with 5 bases the 6th company being detached to form a combined grenadier battalion hence 4 bases. jon |

I was think five bases of four figures but a friend of mine suggested four bases of four. It really doesn't matter. Whatever you think looks right. As long as you can distinguish standard, small, large and tiny units you'll be fine. |

I do something very similar to "ciaphas" … 4-5 bases (16-20 models) for regular size … 6+ for large … 3 for small. Mike B |

I do 4 to 5 bases with 4 figures per base for my units. However in scenario's unit sizes will change so I wouldn't overly worry about it. Christopher |

We went with 16 figs for a standard unit and 12 for small. Mine are mounted on narrower (1/2 depth) bases with two figs per base. So it takes 8 of my bases to make one of your square bases, but all works out the same. I did this because I also plan to try other rule sets like Regimental Fire and Fury for AWI. |

I started basing 6 figures to a 2 x 2 inch stand. 4 stands to a unit. I think 4 stands looks right but if I was starting over, I would only do 4 figures per base. 24 figures to paint for each unit is killing me. Matthew |

I'm doing 4 bases of 4 figs. |

Thanks for all the input. Looks like 4 40x40 bases with 4 figures each. :-) |

I'm another that does 4 bases of 4 figures (16 figs) as a normal sized unit. I give the Hessians 5 stands, though. Seems to look right for the AWI.

Wondering how to base the bigger Hessian units. 5 bases is a good solution. Thanks Bandolier. |

@Bandolier – they look beautiful. Thanks for sharing! |

I forgot to say your figs. are really nice. |

I personally like 5 stands of 4 figures as it allows the command stand to be in the dead center of a unit. |

Wow, Bandolier all those casualty figures make the battle look pretty intense! |

I got funny looks when I first started using casualty figures. But I find they help with the narrative of a game when you see casualties placed as 'hits' are scored. With so many bodies in the enclosure they are getting stomped on… |

Depends on how many soldiers were in the unit at that particular time. Some units in a particular battle could have between one and as many as six. Depends on what ratio you are using. Rules should be a guide but since these are British rules they probably don't mention ratio or scale. |

I like casualty figures on the table too. |
