For Cataphracts, should the horse armor be bronze or iron? I'm thinking bronze for weight reasons but I've seen them painted with an iron color as well. |

Would the "iron" ones simply be silvered bronze? link If so, anything goes. |

Thanks for the link. Sounds like I could go all silver then. |

H. Russell Robinson noted in 'Armour of Imperial Rome' that a lot of bronze and iron armor and fittings was all or partially tinned. This would have a silvery appearance and provide a more corrosion resistant surface. Silver having a tendency to tarnish and repeated polishing would wear away the plating. Tin of course also being much cheaper. He particularly noted this as being done with some bronze scale armor where alternating scales were tinned to provide a contrast to the unplated bronze scales. At any rate that is my rational for painting portions of cataphracts and other armored figures with an 'antique silver' paint. |

I have done some with painted scales, in red, blue or green. Can't say that there is any historical source to back it up, but we know shields, helmets, etc, were painted, so why not scale horse armour, or even scale cuirass, etc? Anyway, I like the way it looks. I simply painted the scales bright silver first, then used washes of paint and/or inks until I was satisfied with how it looked. |

Even mail was sometimes tinted. |

We don't know. However the Bactrian Greek cataphract armour pieces from Ai Khanum, which includes what _may_ be one piece of horse-armour, is all iron. They may well have used both materials. link for the reconstruction from the OOP Montvert book. |

Thanks for the pic GurKhan. I actually saw that one last night. I am probably going to paint them like the figure on the left. I've seen miniatures painted just that way and they looked quite nice.
From here. link Bronze and silvered. |
