Taking Khurasan's beautiful sculpt, I gave it what I was hoping for an organic skin effect with semi bone like protrusions for the raised sections. THis monster for 15mm is still pretty intimidating against 28mm models. I had fun with the scales and bones on this guy. He worked perfectly for my 28mm X-com incursion response force game.

Buzzkill. I'm sorry but I'm just not feeling that paintjob although it's technically impressive. Also why is it tumbling over on its side?

McWong7306 Dec 2014 5:26 p.m. PST

I feel it. Great brushwork, amazing in fact.

Atropos90706 Dec 2014 5:29 p.m. PST

Most people dont actually like my paintjobs, no reason to be sorry. Most like simpler more "accepted" pallets and themes.

Its leaning over because the choice was either leaning forward or leaning sideways. Forward was boring, most people will have it leaning forward if they get two straight legs and two short legs as I did. I figured sideways was more dynamic because it can dodge by leaning faster than it can move its enormous rear over. Just like most people model titans as standing at attention or walking forward slowly… I wanted something more interesting.

I would expect a massive war machine to be able to avoid fire by having some ability to do more than just walk ponderously forward slowly and take hits. Something like this should be able to walk or lean sideways or backwards while engaging threats at any bearing. Otherwise killing it would be easy.

I dig the sort of organic look you went with.

Joep12306 Dec 2014 6:50 p.m. PST

That's very cool…looks like a living weapon.
Thanks for sharing this.

bullwinklethecat1207 Dec 2014 3:24 a.m. PST

OK….how did you do that 'cracked leather look'??????

LordNth07 Dec 2014 4:16 a.m. PST

You had Fun painting all those tiny scales?? My god it's impressive paint scheme.

nazrat07 Dec 2014 10:16 a.m. PST

Count me as one would REALLY likes your paint job. And the fact that Khurasan knocked this model out of the park doesn't hurt, either!

Lion in the Stars07 Dec 2014 10:18 a.m. PST

Holy crap that's a huge model!

I really dig the effects you did on the guns.

Atropos90707 Dec 2014 10:36 a.m. PST

Bullwinkle: the scales are a patterned stencil to get the shape then several hours going through and darkening the inside with a simple gradient with the AB. The cracked leather, or bone(the intent) look was a cracked stencil then going back over and adding appropriate shading and edging so it wasnt clearly just a cracked stencil look. I figured exterior bones on something ilke this would see wear and cracking as it grew. Like big tusks and such, especially if it were in many hostile environments.

Awesome painting

You are a painting God!

No Such Agency09 Dec 2014 7:48 p.m. PST

Seeing it presented this way makes me think this model is perfect for some sort of "ocean living aquatic aliens or creatures invade the land" scenario. Like if the creatures in "The Abyss" were malevolent. Or maybe a high-tech version of Lovecraft's Deep Ones (aka. "BLUE HADES" in the Charles Stross books).

The Shadows have landed their ground walker.

Grignotage10 Dec 2014 8:34 a.m. PST

Very cool painting!

If I were to quibble, and damned unlikely, I should have gone with more organic shaped weapons. I said I thought this would be a good 'nid beast, and I really think your PJ is appropriate proof of concept. ;->=

While some of the shots make the angle look a bit awkward, on the whole, two thumbs up for the 'leaning into the turn' pose.

great painting, great model, but i don't like the lopsided pose…….

Fishbuckle10 Dec 2014 9:33 a.m. PST

I love the paint job, but am also interested in where the terrain is from?!

darebear10 Dec 2014 6:47 p.m. PST

I like the pose. Very dynamic.

monash191611 Dec 2014 3:32 a.m. PST

That is really a great paintjob. I like the light effects very much. Could you please explain how you did that? 😃

As for the pose of the walker, first I thought it was looking odd 😳, but your explanation makes perfect sense to me.
After all we also have a lot of miniature soldiers with active poses as well (jumping, running, etc), wo why not for a walker 😎😃

I like the paint job, but I also liked the work on the storage tanks and the shacks with corrugated roofs. It's inspiring.

Atropos90718 Jan 2015 6:35 p.m. PST

Chris Walkley: the terrain is almost entirely my own creations. I designed and had printed off the vinyl base mat 6x10ft I believe. I used stock photos for the corrugated water towers and wrapped baby formula tubes and similar. I designed the modular buildings and populated them with papercraft terrain pieces of furnature or made up my own where I thought the papercraft out there was too boring. I made the temple of the tree greehouse, the 3 tiered park etc etc I wanted a sci-fi city so I built it mostly from scratch or stock photos.

My favorite is the roll out mat but that took a long time to generate in a huge file.

As for the walkers pose, I figured it needs to be able to lean around corners to track targets faster than it can if it has to move its entire mass around the corner. Plus the way those feet are shaped I figured it digs those into the ground so leaning shouldnt be that diffiicult as they dig in and scoup inwart for an anchor point.

Sargonarhes: =) Yes an appropriate link as I was looking at shadow ships for my initial inspiration for the skin of this guy.

Achtung Minen20 Jan 2015 2:54 p.m. PST

Neat, the colour scheme reminds me vaguely of the Marathon video games:
