Having trawled around TMP and the web I'm struggling to find much that gives me an idea on how well the Baueda "Hostis" and Sgt Major Miniatures "Bloody Day"(formerly QRF/Feudal Miniatures) 15mm ranges would mix together?

Specifically I'm looking at the Dark Ages 11th/12th centuries and using both ranges to fill in some respective gaps in each as well as provide some more figure variety. So, we're talking about Vikings, Irish/Norse-Irish, Pre-Feudal Scots and Welsh.

If I've missed anything obvious out there or am covering old ground (ie previous posts) my apologies in advance but any help/pointers would be gratefully received.

Thanks and regards,

Mark

My experience with FM was that they were quite 'small' more like genuine 15mm, haven't used the Baueda yet.

I don't know if this will help but "Bloody Day"(formerly QRF/Feudal Miniatures) 15mm ranges are all compatible with Essex. I use both on the same base. I cannot comment on Baueda but if you see a Baueda/Essex comparison shot you can judge on that.

I have some Baueda Normans and they match really well with OG15's. I think OG15's are a little larger than Essex. I can't help you with that since I don't have many Essex figs.

I think Baueda are least best among Khurasan, Splintered Light, and OG15. I am sure you can find better stuff, keep looking.

Thanks for the responses chaps – appreciated.

My gut feeling is that there may be a slight difference – just whether its enough to make them look odd side by side… we'll see…

Cannot agree regarding Baueda though – I already have lots of the old Miniature Wars 15mm (by the same sculptor) and they paint up easily and most effectively – at 15mm scale they work exceedingly well. Other ranges may be more anatomically "true" but at this scale there's something about that approach which doesn't quite work to my mind – the figures end up looking a bit weedy and lose definition when painted up. I prefer what may be called a graphical design aesthetic and a certain heft/chunkiness to my figures. And I feel the Baueda figures just have some character to them!

With respect, I wasn't really asking for recommendations of other ranges, rather a specific figure comparison. I find the Khurasan historical stuff a bit spindly as per my concerns already mentioned and a little anaemic if I'm honest… but I love a lot of their fantasy/sci-fi ranges. Similarly, whilst I really like the Splintered Light 20mm fantasy/woodland stuff I feel the 15/18 historical ranges are not to the same high standard. Lastly I have to be frank, I cannot abide OG15s of which I find much of the sculpting exceedingly lazy. Sorry.

But at the end of the day it is all subjective after all.

Very best, Mark

My apologies. I don't own Sgt Major Dark Ages stuff and I let my biases regarding Baueda creep in.

In fact I have quite a few spares and if you aim to have Baueda I'd send you some. I only kept a few as they were not working for me as I hoped.

You are right on about Khurasan. They are probably the most accurately proportioned but look skinny compared to your typical stuff.

The SL stuff is a very high standard. Let me put it this way for an average painter like myself looking at the website pictures I feel the Baueda stuff is painted nicer than it really is and the Splintered Light stuff worse than it is.

I think your instincts are pretty good. From looking at pictures I think the Sgt Major stuff would match up very nicely with Baueda. One last unsolicited thing and I'll shut up. I think the Donnington New Era and the QR stuff from Poland would fit together pretty good with Baeuda and Sgt Major. I fancy some of those Vikings.

Are you doing multi based or skirmish? I've been working on individual based so collecting as many different poses as I can get my hands on.

PrivateSnafu – absolutely no problem at all and glad you took my response in good heart.

Its a very valid point you make regarding how miniatures are painted on Vendors websites – it can indeed make a huge difference to perception.

I'll admit may try a few Donnington and yes those QR figures are indeed nice though I'm sure I read somewhere that they are on the large size so may have some compatibility issues for me. I still want to maintain some consistency across the board and I find invariably some compromise will be involved when building several armies myself for a period where a manufacturer offers most but not quite all you're looking for.

I'm looking at element based gaming rather than skirmish which I can use with Dux Bellorum / DBA (changes to version 3 have apparently opened up the Dark Ages from previous constraints of earlier versions!) / even HoTT and any other rules that crop up….. "big(ish)" bases – probably doubling up the numbers with around 6 – 8 foot figures that just look a little more substantial without breaking the bank. So I am looking for some variety.

Best wishes, Mark
