Hey guys looking at getting the epic 40k starter box just wanted to know how well it played out of the box.
Don't want to get too deep just have some games out of the box and not need to collect loads of extras.
Possible?

Calico Bill05 Dec 2014 4:48 a.m. PST

Yes it can. I've done it, and its how I first got into Epic. However, IMHO you'll have a much better experience going to here net-armageddon.org and downloading the Epic Armageddon rules and army lists for Space Marines and Orks. Just use the minis in the box. This latest version of Epic seems to have finally got the integration of the various arms 'right'.
After 40 years of gaming, I've yet to find a set of rules to equal Epic A's smoothness, completeness, and fun. I hope you enjoy a similar experience.

Epic 40K was my favorite version of Epic. It comes with a good amount of stuff, for sure. I think it would only have so much replay value that way.

I loved Epic 40k, but many people found it too lacking in detail – give it a try, and if you find you'd like more chrome, follow Calico Bill's suggestion and download Epic Armageddon, but I'd definitely give the rules in the box a whirl. (I've always suspected Epic 40k would've been much better received if it was the first epic game – I think it's a great system, and badly under-rated, but for players used to Space Marine / Titan Legions, it was just too radical a departure. If the player base hadn't had expectations based on its predecessors, I suspect it would've got a much better reception.)

As for the contents, it's definitely playable from the box (far more so than most GW games – the contents are sufficiently varied to make proper armies from) but a few additions would doubtless improve the replayability.

Plays much better out of the box. To play in the box in such a confined space with all the goodies that come with it makes it too crowded. :-)

Are Epic 40k starter boxes still available retail or just by ebay?

Personal logo Doms Decals Sponsoring Member of TMP05 Dec 2014 7:33 a.m. PST

Decidedly Ebay only I'm afraid – they went OOP a good few years ago now, and GW have even completely axed production of epic models now. :-(

Dragon Gunner05 Dec 2014 7:36 a.m. PST

Ask yourself if you are having a good time would you want to add more items to your existing box armies or start some new armies that are not in the box? If the answer is yes I strongly suggest you look at Epic 40K prices on Ebay. If price does not concern you go for it. Others will chime in you can substitute from other manufacturers and I strongly agree with them. I embarked down this path 6 months ago, spent a fortune and I am still not done. I have roughly 60 items I am still trying to purchase.

I strongly recommend Net Epic over Epic 40K. Epic lacked detail and went for a vanilla approach to speed game play while Net Epic added enough detail to satisfy me.

well since Legion 4 hasn't chimed in yet, link

your one stop resource for all things Epic. every iteration, rule set, miniature and proxy.

Dale Hurtt05 Dec 2014 10:56 a.m. PST

Onslaught Minis makes compatible figures for those races not provided by GW originally. Not-Tau, Not-Dark Eldar, Not-Sisters of Battle, etc.

Privateer4hire05 Dec 2014 10:57 a.m. PST

Another great thing about Epic 40k is the starter box forces have 'historical refight' scenarios that pretty much use what's included. I don't recall having to use anything beyond the starter box to field those forces.

Dale Hurtt: How does the scale of the Onslaught Minis compare to the GW epic miniatures?

Thanks!

Weasel05 Dec 2014 1:09 p.m. PST

It plays okay. If you can find an unopened box,its a treasure trove of models and terrain.

We ended up switching to NetEpic and didn't really look back but we had plenty of fun hours with E40K until then.

The Onslaught miniatures fit in well with the Epic 40k models. I bought their not-nids (Legion?) and they were clean, crisp casts.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP06 Dec 2014 10:26 a.m. PST

Yep … they go by the " Nom de guerre " as Legion … no affiliation with me. evil grin I got some of their hybrids ! Lovely little pieces !

Dale Hurtt06 Dec 2014 9:20 p.m. PST

Onslaught Minis do fit will with later GW Epics, but understand that early GW Epics do not fit well with later versions; the earlier versions were noticeably smaller.

Onslaught's lines are really growing and, as indicated, they are crisp. So picking out details is relatively easy, and washing produces nice shadows.

IMO … with all the newer[& older] 6mm Sci-fi model lines out there … There are few reasons to only buy GW Epic. Predilection and preference being the biggest reason for some. You'll probably only find GW Epic on eBay, and trade forums of Tactical Command and Bartertown … Just for the exercise, off the top of my head, some of the other choices for 6mm Sci-fi : DRM, Exodus Wars/Steel Crown, CinC/PFC, Microworld, Trouble Maker Games, Onslaught, Angel Barracks, PlasmaBlast, GZG, Old Crow, Darkest Star, Brigade, Khurasan, Scotia, Irregular, Zombiesmith[Quar] …

MiniatureReview09 Dec 2014 4:08 p.m. PST

I received a bunch of figures from TroubleMaker Games and their figures are excellent as well.

I like GW epic models and you can occasionally find some really good deals, even on Ebay.

I am currently building a squat army and it can be a bit pricey. I think I have managed to acquire enough infantry. Now I am working on vehicles.

Onslaught Miniatures has a wicked cool squatish vehicle they have been working on. IMO this is the best vehicle I have seen for them. Hopefully a train will be next.

I think I am done building an Ork army, just looking for a few stompas with treds. TroubleMaker Games has some very orkish figures. They are a little bit bigger than GWs.
