Very Nice! I've been using sand with various other debris in it, but I really like the material you used. I may have to go see what the bags of soil/compost look like here in US gardening stores. |

Dirt to model dirt… will wonders never cease! Seriously, so simple an idea and I overlooked it. I already use sand, small gravel, twigs, etc. Nothing gets the color of dirt better than dirt! :-) |

Exactly the point, Ancientsgamer! Why mixing a lot of stuff to get it to look like natural soil, when you can use just that, soil?! |

By the way, the PVA glue is also good to prevent mold from forming in the texture over time. It acts as a sealant. I have bases I've done years ago and they still look perfect. It's also good to mimic mud. If you add an excessive amount of glue to the compost, once it dries, it'll keep a damp look. |

I have always used real Waterloo mud, from the field at the south east corner of Hougoumont. Snag is it starts out Humbrol Dark Earth Colour (funny that) but dries as hard as a rock and a light sandy colour. (Guess that is why there was the sand pit at LHS) So the answer is mix it with PVA +++………. and then paint it dark earth. Makes perfect sense to me. (I have an Irish passport) |

I have always used real Waterloo mud, from the field at the south east corner of Hougoumont Are you joking or is this for real? Using actual waterloo mud to come up with basings for your napoleonics is just… Surreal! |

Deadly serious………first time I brought back a 35mm film canister of mud. Second time I brought a massive Tupperware style plastic canister. Third time I brought back three. You get some funny looks, but actually few folk make it down to Hgmt (or at least that was the case). As I said, in truth, it does not work as it dries so light. You end up painting it anyway. Any physicist could tell you how many molecules are really anything to do with the site 1815. Not many, with fertiliser introduced every single year…but….some. I only became weird after the aliens brought me back after those experiments…….I asked for some Martian Dust but they said no
