1) It's nothing but a combination of a magic sword and magic wand. 2) Those added guards look like more of a hazard to the user than the target. 3) Star Wars is not science fiction. It is fantasy. |

1> Not a fan of the look. 2> I will not try to rationalize if it would/would not work. 3> Supposedly the light saber is supposed to look like it was built by someone who did not know what they were doing. I'll buy that. 4> Still don't like the look. |

That was good. I am staying away from trailers and such. I am hoping old man jar jar has a walk on. |

2) Those added guards look like more of a hazard to the user than the target. How? Certainly no more than the blade itself. As a fencer, I can't see any real situation where I might accidentally come in contact with a crossguard on my own weapon. Swords aren't handled in such a way as to make that likely in the first place. |
Editor in Chief Bill | 03 Dec 2014 12:56 p.m. PST |
I think it is safe enough, especially in a weapon that is turned off when not in use. I just think it looks lame. |
javelin98 | 03 Dec 2014 12:58 p.m. PST |
That's really the only thing I saw in the trailer that I didn't like. |

Anyone remember the lightsabre duelling rules from White Dwarf issue 6 (ish) ? Going to dig them out and see what advantage the crusader blade should have |
KTravlos | 03 Dec 2014 1:56 p.m. PST |
Well people will find reasons if they look for them. I for one dig a long-sword looking lightsaber and loved the new trailer. |
basileus66 | 03 Dec 2014 1:56 p.m. PST |
It looks like a medieval weapon, and I like medieval weapons. |
Mr Elmo | 03 Dec 2014 1:57 p.m. PST |
That's really the only thing I saw in the trailer that I didn't like. Really? I'm worried the whole looping Millenium Falcon scene was designed for 3D and Imax. I want a great movie, not a lot of tropes and scenes designed for 3D screens. |
McWong73 | 03 Dec 2014 2:03 p.m. PST |
It wasn't shot in 3d. I may be wrong but this film went as old school as possible with complete sets, model shots (or more likely a scan of a model) and most importantly shot on film. I was burnt horribly by the prequels, and this time round I have a feeling we will have a Star Wars that delivers, and if not then at least we get one made by people who actually care about Star Wars. Disney has literally spent billions to make this, they're highly unlikely to serve us a in a punchbowl. |
doug redshirt | 03 Dec 2014 3:53 p.m. PST |
They could serve us warmed over slop and just by including the words star and wars they will make billions. |
15mm and 28mm Fanatik | 03 Dec 2014 3:56 p.m. PST |
Fanboys complain about the most trivial things. The lightsaber doesn't make sense. Stormtroopers are supposed to be….. |
Mako11 | 03 Dec 2014 4:27 p.m. PST |
Perhaps cutting off his own hand is how Vader REALLY lost his, and the movie producer just got it wrong. With a single flick of the wrist, to pull a samurai-warrior like move with a lightsaber, off it goes. |
McWong73 | 03 Dec 2014 4:28 p.m. PST |
That storm trooper issue people had truly disgusted me. |
Doms Decals | 03 Dec 2014 4:28 p.m. PST |
Disney has literally spent billions to make this, they're highly unlikely to serve us a Bleeped text in a punchbowl.
Four words: John Carter Lone Ranger ;-) Disney plus big budget doesn't necessarily mean any damned good. That said, I really am hopeful here – as McWong said, they *do* seem to have learned from Lucas's mistakes – plenty of evidence of real models, not just CGI, and Abrams generally knows what he's doing. I don't think there's a hope of living up to the excitement of the original trilogy, but I have a strong suspicion it'll beat episodes 2 and 3. (No need to mention 1 – I've had bouts of flu that I enjoyed more than that….) |
Eclectic Wave | 03 Dec 2014 5:04 p.m. PST |
Rationalization – Maybe the "blades" on the hilt are not set to cut anything, but are there just to 'block' the blade of another light saber, so that you can't slide your blade down the opponents blade and cut their arm/hand off. A flaw in the regular design of the light saber. I mean the only thing that blocks a light saber blade is another light saber blade or a "shield" which doesn't seem man portable. So this is a stop gap? maybe? Not that I care, it's just the first thing I thought of when I saw them. |
kallman | 03 Dec 2014 7:18 p.m. PST |
Dom I will agree on the Lone Ranger but back off on John Carter. John Carter was a well done and faithful to the spirit of the books adaptation. Disney dropped the ball on marketing and appeared to want it to fail. |
sneakgun | 03 Dec 2014 9:11 p.m. PST |
AHHH but look at all the publicity it stirred up. Kaching money in the bank. |
Parzival | 03 Dec 2014 11:22 p.m. PST |
Here's an experiment. Take a cross-hilted sword. Grip it in your hand. Now, without loosening your grip, try to move your wrist so that the crossguard contacts your arm. You're going to have to really bend that wrist very oddly and deliberately to do this. And anyone trained to use the weapon wouldn't make that sort of careless error. It's not a real issue, even if it were a real weapon. |

More Rule of Cool power-creep, begun by Lucas in the Prequels. Next, we'll have light saber nunchucks. Nunchucks are still rad, right? The teaser left me cold. And, yeah, lay off Carter. |

Next, we'll have light saber nunchucks. Nunchucks are still rad, right? I used nunchucks when I was younger. I managed to whack my head, my family jewels and just about everything in between. I would hate to do that with a light saber… |
dilettante | 04 Dec 2014 1:48 p.m. PST |
Read the book 'The Billion Dollar Year'. It devotes about 5 pages to how the new man in charge of advertising got everything with 'John Carter' wrong. Having said that; yes the saber hilts are a bit silly, but not enough to ruin the movie by themselves. |

"Dom I will agree on the Lone Ranger but back off on John Carter. grin John Carter was a well done and faithful to the spirit of the books adaptation. Disney dropped the ball on marketing and appeared to want it to fail." I'm with Kallman – say whatever you like about The Lone Ranger but leave my John Carter out of this! Fantastic movie that was horribly let down by poor marketing. |
Sargonarhes | 12 Dec 2014 6:02 p.m. PST |
Disney being behind it is all the reason I need to avoid it. |
trynda1701 | 13 Dec 2014 4:52 p.m. PST |
Not sure if the hilt makes sense, but the Rule of Cool shot in that trailer was the flight of X-Wings II's flying 'knap of the lake' as it were! I have reservations about Disney and Star Wars combined, but we'll see in a year! |
