Are there any period illustrations of Austrian infantry from the War of the Spanish Succession? I'm bedeviled by some very contradictory sources and would love to see some period illustrations. Thanks.

You can find a lot of illustrations in the New York Public Library Digital Gallery: link

The only problem is there often isn't that much detail in the labels so you almost need to be an expert to know what you are looking at.

Thanks but those are not period illustrations.

You might also find something in the Anne S. K. Brown Military Collection. Unfortunately it isn't organised by period but if you search using the terms "Austria" and "uniform" or just "Spanish Succession" you may turn up something useful. library.brown.edu/cds/askb

Say, SJDonovan, the Anne S. K. Brown Military Collections RULES!

Thank you!

Jeff

P.S. This is the one of the most interesting and useful links that has been shared with us for some time, in my humble opinion.

Thanks Jeff,

But I can't really take much credit. I only discovered it when someone (possibly von Winterfeldt?) posted a link to it here on TMP a few months ago.

Anne S.K. Brown was the leading collector of Military Uniform prints and books. I've had the privilege of visiting the collection many times when it was in her home on campus at Brown University (named after her husband's family)and had the free use of the old copy machine! The collection now resides in the university rare collections library. The curator, Peter Harrington, is extremely knowledgeable, an author and also active in the Company of Military Historians. He is alas very understaffed, so visits to the stacks are limited, but books can be delivered to the reading room.
