D or E. Tough choice. People love to rag on the prequels, but there are a lot of things to love in them. Seeing full bore Jedi and Sith is one of those things. |
GoneNow | 02 Dec 2014 3:09 p.m. PST |
G) Star Wars Rebels Rise of the old masters Kanan vs The Inquisitor. The Inquisitor is a pretty cool villain with some nifty tricks. Kanan is what Obi Wan should have been. |
McWong73 | 02 Dec 2014 3:14 p.m. PST |
A. The fight itself may not have been all that, what do you expect between a man in his seventies and a guy in a mask who can't see, but in terms of the story not only of ANH but the entire six films it can't be beat for mine. |
Redmenace | 02 Dec 2014 3:17 p.m. PST |
The prequels didn't do it for me but D. |
kallman | 02 Dec 2014 3:41 p.m. PST |
Agree I disliked the prequels and hope the new crop of films will somehow erase the memory. However, yes D is top notch and showed the potential. And I agree with McWong that the orginal between Vader and Kenobi (aka Sir Alec Guinness) is a seminal moment in film. |
Bashytubits | 02 Dec 2014 3:52 p.m. PST |
I think it was the one cut from the movies. R2D2 vs C3PO.

The Beast Rampant | 02 Dec 2014 3:58 p.m. PST |
B, followed by C, then A. A dissociative fugue sometime around 2005 has left me with only the fuzziest recollection of The Prequals. Something about…a duck? I dunno. |

G: Younglings vs Training Device. |
Parzival | 02 Dec 2014 4:58 p.m. PST |
A. Because it was the first. B. Because it was the most thematically shocking. D. Because it was the most balletic, with the fantastic "Duel of the Fates" music. (The only good thing in the prequels.) While the Yoda fight was different, in the end it was just too gimmicky and over the top for me, relying entirely on CGI. |
tkdguy | 02 Dec 2014 4:59 p.m. PST |
I'd go with D, but B and C were pretty good too. I'd say E was the worst because the audience in the theater was laughing when I watched it. Nobody should laugh at Yoda. |

Russell120120 | 02 Dec 2014 7:07 p.m. PST |
I agree with Rallynow that "E" has a certain surprise factor. However, why on earth didn't (Revenge of the Sith- Obi-Wan Kenobi vs General Grievous) not make the list? YouTube link Grievous is whipping around four light sabers at one point after all. Granted it ends with Obi-Wan cheating and shooting him, and there is a whole lot of other stuff going on, but it should at least make the list. |
GoGators | 02 Dec 2014 7:09 p.m. PST |
D for special effects. A for story. |
enfant perdus | 02 Dec 2014 7:18 p.m. PST |
I was wondering that too, Russell120120. Or, for that matter, Dooku vs Kenobi and Anakin? Haters gotta hate, as the kids say. |
thosmoss | 02 Dec 2014 8:10 p.m. PST |
A, then B, with a lofty attitude of "of course!" But I've always been fond of (G) Grevious vs. Obi Wan, if simply to be left wondering what the swiss-army-knife body of Grevious might do next … |
Ironwolf | 02 Dec 2014 9:33 p.m. PST |
Have to say D then a close second is the two fights between Dooku vs Kenobi & Anakin. |
Volstagg Vanir | 02 Dec 2014 11:08 p.m. PST |
G Other Even docking several hundred points for 'animation' vs "Live Action", Genndy Tartakovsky's 2003 Clone Wars prequels have some simply incredible visuals, some unbelievably Fantastic pacing, and Kurosawa-esque cinematography. Sadly neglected, and Far superior to the pallid and insipid CGI offerings that followed.

E. CGI or not, this is why you should always be wary of any bug-eyed, green monsters you come across. Regardless of size or syntactic quirks… |
Martin Rapier | 03 Dec 2014 4:38 a.m. PST |
In the movies I guess my favourite is Vader vs Skywalker ESB. 'Impressive'. But like Volstagg, I'm more impressed by the stuff which happens outside the films in the books and video games (esp Knights of the Old Republic and the Jedi Knight series, even The Force Unleashed games aren't bad). Of all those may favourite is storming Onderon in KOTOR II for the sheer, unmitigated slaughter and the final battle with Desann in Jedi Knight II. You really need to be on your toes for that one. |

I can't believe F hasn't gotten a single vote. This question was posted because my brother in law and I had a Thanksgiving debate whether D or F was the greatest lightsaber duel. I have to thank my fellow TMPers for taking my view. Or maybe TMPers just think alike. |
Deucey | 03 Dec 2014 6:56 a.m. PST |
Sorry I forgot Grievous. You're right, he should be a choice. |
zonk76 | 03 Dec 2014 8:23 a.m. PST |
C – Vader vs Skywalker ROTJ It was more of a slug/rage-fest, but it was an awesome duel. Second for me would be F, I really thought that fight was well done and epic (albeit a bit over the top at times, hey, it's a movie and it's Star Wars…), and frankly both Anakin and Kenobi showed more emotion/passion in that one duel than the previous movies combined, IMHO. |
Tommy20 | 03 Dec 2014 8:37 a.m. PST |

The ones with me, my boy and a couple of kitchen rolls tubes while going 'woom woom'. I only get one hand as the other has a plastic cup over my mouth so I can sound like darth vadars rasping voice. "you are my son" "I know I am dad, now take this, woom woom" |

D – a thing of beauty E – Yoda going all crazy A – What? The bad guy won?! Where is Yoda/Palpatine? |
Howler | 03 Dec 2014 7:54 p.m. PST |
E with dooku/kenobi/anakin a close second. Darth Maul dragging his lightsaber like a caged tiger just waiting to get at his prey was a great scene |
enfant perdus | 03 Dec 2014 10:03 p.m. PST |
Another missing entry is the "posse" of Jedi who come to arrest Palpatine/Darth Sidious. Although personally I wouldn't rate it at the top, I do remember being a bit gobsmacked the first time I saw it. Three Jedi Masters killed in a matter of seconds, and a fourth shortly thereafter. But first he gets his hands cutoff. |
optional field | 11 Dec 2014 10:02 a.m. PST |
From an overall point of view I would say C. Vader Skywalker 2 (rj), followed b B. Vader Skywalker 1 (esb) and after that A. Kenobi Vader 2 (anh). However, if A. Kenobi Vader 2 (anh) deserves extra credit for being the first so perhaps it earns first. On the other other hand, while it is not a proper duel the amputation scene in Mos Eisley in ANH strikes me as one of the best uses of sabres in the movies. |
Brooklyn Wargamer | 11 Dec 2014 4:19 p.m. PST |
@Optional field: Very Kurosawa, Yojimbo; even with the cut off arm, which was the intention. |
Einar Gosric | 11 Dec 2014 7:41 p.m. PST |
I would have to say B and C |
Bob Runnicles | 12 Dec 2014 8:19 a.m. PST |
B, then C, then A in that order. Add in D because it was kinda cool but it was the music that really elevated it. The others were just kind of silly. |
Lardie the Great | 13 Dec 2014 11:30 a.m. PST |
F, I think was the best for pace, duration and scope. Far superior to the original trilogy fights (sorry) you also saw different Jedi fighting techniques… |
trynda1701 | 13 Dec 2014 4:33 p.m. PST |
G. Ryan vs Dorkman. And then Ryan vs Dorkman II. Sorry, couldn't resist. These were the first two 'fan created' light sabre duels that I saw. Now, of course, they're all over YouTube! |
