Oooh, the IR-equipped Panther company! Guess this will be showing up on my wish-list! |

Pity they snuck another typo in :( It should be 15th/19th Hussars. It does though mean that the British players will get the Comets they have been desperate to have. |

Just finished reading about the battles to clear the Rhineland and cross the Rhine. Funnily enough IR equipped Panthers didn't make a big enough impression to be worth a mention…. |

Ooooo, that means some halftracks with those big, giant searchlights for the Battle of the Bulge, as well. |

Yesterday, I posted a copy of the advert for Nachtjäger, the new FoW supplement from Battlefront. I've received a request from Wargames Illustrated this morning politely asking that this post be taken down as its felt I've jumped the marketing gun. As Reluctant Trained I'm happy to oblige. Reluctant? Well, pretentiously, I don't want anyone to think that because I'm doing this I'm compromising Model Dads' independence or objectivity. I saw the advert, did a bit of research, some careful scrutinizing and published it. Thought it would be of interest to any readers out there and advised WI accordingly. Trained? Well, I don't want to cause anyone any undue stress. No-one likes their thunder stolen so I'm happy to oblige with a smile and a wink. Hope you understand, Justin |

Well, thanks for letting us know – both the ad and the reason for its withdrawal. |

Funnily enough IR equipped Panthers didn't make a big enough impression to be worth a mention… You will note that I said "THE IR equipped Panther company", because there was (as best I can tell) only ONE company of Panthers so equipped that saw combat. |

Battlefront accidentally let slip the advert before they were ready to reveal it's content to all and sundry. I'll have more news on Nachtjager nearer the time…promise |

I'm pretty excited about this, although this is coming from the big cat newbie player. The IR Panther company is a pretty legit way to have your big cats, and rather unique in combat. I'm planning on building a "company" of about 5 IR Panthers and 2-3 IR halftracks (or whatever works out for the FoW organization). My German forces for Flames are Panzer Lehr in Normandy, Fallschirmjager for the whole war, and the "808th Propagandakompanie" for Weird War Stalingrad 1942. I have Brits for desert war, a Soviet Engineer-Sapper battalion for the fall of the Reich, and American 1ID for Normandy. I would like to build the 442nd RCT for Italy, playing them in an Infantry Aces campaign sounds like a blast. I should probably look at re-building Italians or DAK to face my Desert rats, though I really want to build up raiding forces. I love the 'Aces' campaigns. As far as the IR Panthers go, it should be a company of 10 Panthers (HQ, 3 platoons of 3 tanks each), with each platoon being supported by a single UHU searchlight halftrack. All the tanks should have 2-3 riders with IR-equipped StG44s, and a lightly armored box for them to hide in on the engine deck. And a company of Panzergrenadiers in halftracks, halftracks equipped with IR gear as well (not sure if the infantry also had IR gear, I'd assume so). Heer46 sells separate IR gear for Panthers and other vehicles, as a set of one pintle MG42 with IR gear, IR tube and light for the gunsight, and an IR tube and light for the driver. The gunsight IR gear is specifically for a Panther, the driver's rig seems to be uniform for Panthers and halftracks. |

And of course the crews of IR equiped vehicles were also equipped with the 'vampir' IR systems mounted on stg-44's. I also recall reading that they welded vertical panels to the back decks of the IR Panthers and had troops with stg-44 with vampir riding on the back as close defence. Wasn't there also a unit of Jagdpanthers with IR? Tasty :) |

Wasn't there also a unit of Jagdpanthers with IR? Not that anyone has been able to find supporting evidence for. Probably a couple prototypes set up with the IR gear to see if it would fit, but that's about it. |
