Hi all, Just a quick question – I'm getting conflicting statistics for the number of British troops who can reasonably be described as having participated in the attack on 1 July (i.e., infantry, but not artillery, etc. – the former including those who didn't necessarily make it beyond the front line for whatever reason, as in the case of the unfortunate Newfoundland Bn.). Some sources say 100,000, some say 150,000. What's likely to be the nearer figure, please? And roughly how many Germans were on the receiving end of the attack on 1 July? About 50,000? (Presumably it's not believed a huge number had been killed in the week-long bombardment). Many thanks in advance for any help! Cheers all, Redcoat |

Most of the sources talk in terms of divisions, such as the wikipedia entry: link so 13 British Divisions x 12000 infantrymen ea is your 150,000. (plus another six French divisions). Six German divisons is around 72,000 infantrymen, although some of them faced the French and some (iirc around 6000?) were killed in the bombardment and a further 10-12000 were killed in the attack. |
