Grenadierbattalion von Zschock, commanded by
Gottlieb von Zschock from regiment Strassoldo Nr. 27

made from greandier companies (two each) of

Terzy Nr. 16 – violett facings
Strassoldo Nr. 27 – emperor's yellow (Kaisergelb)
Lattermann Nr. 45 crimson

The mounted battalion comander is an AB conversion from a mounted Officers of 1805 with helmet

Technically the sashes as well as the wooden Tschudera (water container) is wrong there they were gradually introduced in 1798 again.

Nevertheless very nice figures from AB

Wonderful figures and painting

Wow!! Those really put mine to shame. I've got some Blue Moon Austrian Grenadiers waiting to get started but I doubt they'll be anywhere near your standard of painting.

The way you've painted the Austrian 'white' is stunningly realistic

von Winterfeldt02 Dec 2014 11:19 a.m. PST

Thanks for the comment about the "white" – I am quite pleased with the result – after a bit experimenting, I wanted to have a sort of "warm" white and get the colour of the natural wool right was well.
I undercoated the figure white then applied a glaze of Duncan dark brown with a bit of Vallejo matt medium in it.
It has however a bit redish tinge so next time I might just use natural umber.
Then I apply a 1 : 1 mix of Coat d'Armes bone and Coat d'Armes unbleached wool over the coat, waistcoat and breeches area and don't cover the deep shades so that the glaze will show through.
To this mix I add then Duncan ivory and highlight.
In case I like to have an even higher highlight I use an artist water colour white on the highest light areas.
There the "whites" are quite translucent – it is building up well.
I forced myself only to shade white and flesh in such a time consuming way, the rest just glazing

Crikey, that's a heck of a recipe for any figures, and you're painting 18's ! ! Respect to your dedication. As i said before i think the 'white Austrian wool' effect is so impressive, your labour of love has really really paid off.

vW,
These came out very good. It seems like your getting your painting groove back.

Really nice! I think white is absolutely the most difficult color to paint. Your technique produces superb results! Also the "barber pole" flag staff is just great! How you do that with lines so even is astounding.

Thanks for posting.

John

von Winterfeldt: I thought I had seen some really impressive paint jobs in that scale but I think this tops them. Would I be impolite to ask you how long per figure it takes you to paint to this standard, (if so please forgive me)?

Very nice Work indeed

von Winterfeldt03 Dec 2014 9:47 a.m. PST

Thanks for all the feed back, I don't consider my figures to be that much top compared to a lot of other esteemed painters on the forum, it is maybe a bit different.

For the pole – it was painted white alltogether, than a broad yellow just to allow a visible narrow white stripe – on top of the yellow a red (artist water colours) to allow only a narrow stripe of the yellow and on top of the read a black (artist water colours) to allow only a narrow red, a sort of step by step adding layers and leaving some original paint uncovered.

I needed for all those figures about three weeks – in my spare time – evenings or the odd hours on the week end, I am not timing myself by the hour.

I forced myself only to highlight activly the flesh and the white coat, the rest is only glazes of artist water colours with a bit of Vallejo matt medium over a basic colour – the result is sort of self shading.

I admit – I love painting modell soldiers and to paint such high quality stuff as those AB Austrians is pure enjoyment.

Incredible work! They look like they are marching straight out of an Ottenfeld print.
