"History's three great submarine campaigns include the First Battle of the Atlantic, the Second Battle of the Atlantic, and the US Navy's (USN) war against Japanese commerce in World War II. The contestants fought these campaigns through asymmetrical means, with submarines doing battle against aircraft and surface escorts. But the greatest true submarine campaign never (or only intermittently) went "hot." Waged with advanced, streamlined submarines, hunting each other from the polar ice cap to the Eastern seaboard, the Cold War undersea "game" lasted for over three decades. In case of real war, these submarines would safeguard (or destroy) NATO's trans-Atlantic lifeline, and would protect (or sink) much of the nuclear deterrent of America, Russia, Britain, and France…" Full article here link Amicalement Armand |

I would not have included the Oscar-class (the Kursk accident leaves me with grave doubts about the class' seaworthiness), but that is actually a really well-done "Top 5" list! |

The 688 Class belongs on this list. I might be biased as I served in the US submarine service Friom 1982 to 1992. Whether during real world ops or wargames and having encountered many vessels from other nations we always maintained the acoustic advantage. The Type 209 being the exception which disappeared and we could not track. Our sonar systems were superior as was our sound silencing. Just saying. From a former STS1SS |

Oscar out and 688 class goes in. Had a cousin who said the soviet boats they feared the most were the Alphas. Said they dove deeper and could outrun our torpedoes as well. |

Didn't check the site, but lots of good ones in my book, for different reasons, e.g. Los Angeles and Ohio classes, Alpha and Akula for the Soviets, etc. Not really up to speed on the best British subs, or those of other nations, though I know they make good ones, as do the Germans, and Swedes, amongst others, especially the AIP driven ones. |
