Are there any good history books people here can recommend which focus on the first world war's naval war in the east? Thanks. |

"Gentleman of war" and "Swan of the East',both about the Emden by Dan Van der Dat and Edwin P.Hoyt respectively. Also Kreuzer Krieg by Edwin P hoyt and "Graf Spees Raiders 'by yates. I believe allthese books to be out of print ,but probably available on E-Bay .All great reads. Plus numerous books on theraider "Wolf",which also had a small floatplane the Wolfchen"." |

I highly recommend First Victory by Mike Carlton: overall is HMAS Sydney vs SMS Emden focus but it's told within the broad sweep of early naval action in the East. A great read, IMHO: link |

This might provide you with an interesting "what-if" scenario! link |

Two other books worth looking into - "Battle on the Seven Seas – German Cruiser Battles 1914-1918", by Gary Staff. "Konigsberg – A German East African Raider", by Kevin Patience. B |

All good suggestions… I might add The Cruise of the Sea Eagle… |

I'll add one more – "The Kaiser's Pirates", by Nick Hewitt. Don't be put off by the somewhat hyperbolic title. It is actually a well done book that makes use of some previously unpublished IWM documents. It also offers a fine selection of hitherto unpublished photos drawn from what must have been some very dusty IWM archives. Another plus – the author actually writes pretty well. B |
