Persian Officer 28mm

I finally completed this nice Persian sample figure from Gorgon…maybe they will offer the range again if its practical… but these are cool Steve Saleh sculpts.

Here he is added to the glass case alongside others attempting to save Darius as he constantly flees..

Great job – particularly the diamond pattern on his pants. Once again remind myself to paint Battlestandard's Darius and Chariot (in the in-box for some time……)

Be great to see the range actually issued.

This is quite an array of figures… from Battlestandard to Foundry, Vendel, older Foundry, Newline Designs, and the modified North Star Darius with 1st Corps horses and rig….

waaslandwarrior28 Nov 2014 2:58 p.m. PST

Very well painted!
The second picture is also great, with lost of variety.

I should realy start painting my own Persians, now my Greek armies are almost ready (near to 600 figs).

JJartist28 Nov 2014 3:34 p.m. PST

thanks… but with 600 Greeks you will need at least 6000 Persians.. best of luck!! (just joking you only really need 10,000 :)

He's lovely, JJ.

I hadn't realised that Gorgon got any Persians from Steve (aside from the archer), are there any others?

Best, Simon

I'm not certain either… but there are greens on their website still

You paint a hundred.. I paint one… it's all relative:)

Very nice

How do you paint the patterns on the trousers and shirt ?

Thanks

John

JJartist28 Nov 2014 11:33 p.m. PST

I actually kind of wing it on trousers and patterns….in 28mm it's lucky I can still do it at all… however I have not done a whole regiment of lozenge pants!!

(If you look close you can see I did a much tighter pattern on the older Foundry figure)…

On the pants I'd just call it a four point process. Starting at the top I just line in the yellow on top of the red, then fill in a rhombus… I'm not going for perfection-- in fact it's really much less perfect than the Foundry factory jobs.

Once you have the first one done, it's just a matter of wrapping them around. Time consuming yes… rewarding.. maybe :)

Once they were all done, I kind of ran a orangish wash over it all, then when dry I painted in a few highlights… like I said, way more rewarding work to save on a bigger figure!

The tunic pattern is kind of made up and just developed as I did it, it's actually a bit sloppy, but my intent was to just get it done, I was shocked when the Facebook posted image came in so large on TMP.. oops.

Just for kicks here is another angle:

Thanks JJ, it's useful to know that they have some other bits. I vaguely recall seeing some Persian cavalry. Such a pity that the range wasn't completed.

Best, Simon

It's like dicing on the hose with Highlanders. I would much rather have it finished than have to paint it. grin

Das Sheep29 Nov 2014 8:07 a.m. PST

I love that Darius is crushing some of his own men to death as he flee's. Thats so awesome.

LEGION 195029 Nov 2014 8:25 a.m. PST

They will NEVER be released. The range was never finish ! Mike Adams P.S. It is really a shamed that Steve never finished it for Gorgon! Along with other ranges!

JJartist29 Nov 2014 2:42 p.m. PST

@Legion… yes I think with the current new finds some really interesting Persian Heavy cavalry models can be created… too bad Mr. Saleh did not wish to continue.

JJartist29 Nov 2014 2:43 p.m. PST

Ok just for fun.. here's why Darius is perpetually fleeing…

That is a lovely little figure JJ.

LEGION 195029 Nov 2014 5:47 p.m. PST

JJartist, I think that there was two cavalry figures also in the dead range. To bad Steve never finish the range of the Persians as he promised and the range of Latin Allies. It looks like he NEVER finishes ranges! Mike Adams

Definitely some great brush work here, and beautiful standards.
JJ by chance can you give us a short history of that Alexander miniatures?

JJartist30 Nov 2014 11:59 a.m. PST

The Alexander figure was a gift from Professor Enrique Ramos Peinado, from Valencia Spain. He sent it to me as his way of thanking me for my efforts on the Warhammer Ancient Battles, Alexander the Great game supplement.

It was a very kind act, and one of the best rewards for doing that project. There are only a few of the those miniatures ever cast and I am thrilled to have two of them.

When I get the second done I plan to send this one back to him as a reward!!

It is a larger scale figure.. more true to 30mm than most. The horse is very well done but massive compared to the rest.. but fitting of Alexander's better breeds :)

But here is the full story:

Spectacular brush work on a fantastic miniature. Thank's for the response.

Great stuff!
I always enjoy looking at your Persians.

JJartist02 Dec 2014 2:21 p.m. PST

You cannot ever have enough of them !

Trevsky03 Dec 2014 6:04 p.m. PST

I asked Hank at Gorgon about the Persian range back in Feb 2013. They were 'on hold' then due to the lack of a sculptor but not definitely dead.

Nice officer Jeff. I still love your fleeing Darius too. He must have fled over the Oxus by now. :)

Darius can run but he cant hide…

Brushstroke Bill06 Dec 2014 5:21 p.m. PST

I love how every figure in the group is very individualized in terms of colors they're wearing but at the same time there's a strong sense of cohesiveness to their "look." Great work!

Thanks for all the nice comments.

I tried to do some home made transfers for my Kardakes….

Here is how they printed out:

Sadly they looked flat on my bronze shields, so I am trying to use them as painting guides to snazz them up.. time consuming.. yes.. but better than freehanding 32 of these!

Once I get some time off, I intend to do a full report on these on ancientbattles.com

Final touch up of home made decals…

lessons learned, thicker borders in black. Make sure the decals have at least two coats of gloss coat.
