They were enemies for ages. They fought a long war (not so far). There are not a Western "boot" support for Irak now. ISIS are natural enemies from the Iranians. What could US and the rest of the World do if that happened? Fight Iran as allied with ISIS?. It's a similar case of Syria. If the Iranian Army began to march throught the frontiers with Irak to Bagdag… what would be their problem? Amicalement Armand |

Biggest problem? Iran would never be able to counter Western air power. We are much better suited to fight a conventional force such as Iranian regulars with need for a logistics train than hunting for pick-up trucks or a few men with RPGs. Remember this incident? Freaked the Iranian military out so badly that they responded by announcing their own "stealthy" fighter… (made of wood as it turned out) link As for fighting alongside ISIS? No way in hell, not that they'd ever agree. |

Why would Iran invade Iraq? Tehran's political influence in Iraq has never been greater, thanks to the 2003 US invasion which toppled Saddam Hussein. ISIS/ISIL came into being precisely because the Sunnis perceived that Shia influence in both Iraq and Syria has become too strong. |

Yep, why bother, since they and their proxies are already in control of the government? |

All true guys, but could the Persians take on ISIS and win ? They couldn't do worse than the Iraqs … maybe ? They showed minimal at best military prowess in their war with the Iraqi a few decades back … It is a question who was more militarily incompetent back then, the Iraqis or Persians ? However, the Persians did well against the unarmed denizens of the US Embassy link in '79 … |

If Iran invaded Iraq, we should stand by wringing our hands and decrying the violence. Call for sanctions that we would never follow through on. Just look busy and concerned. That would be our best strategy. |

Agree with John. About the Iranian intention if you talked anytime with any of them, they always want Bagdad under their influence. Taking Bagdad is part of their dream. "As for fighting alongside ISIS? No way in hell, not that they'd ever agree." I consider any Western Country fought with them (ISIS), but who fought against them side by side with the Iranian Army if they invaded Irak? Nobody yet. So, the Iranians has free hands to act there. About the Western Air Force, they would attack the Iranian Army?. I guess no. Amicalement Armand |

Couldnt we just sell the place and walk away leaving the new tenants with the pest problem. I would rather the Persians have it then the Arabs |

Frankly I'd almost welcome the Iranians(mostly Shia) invading Iraq(60% + Shia) and going toe-to-toe with ISIS(Sunni) … As I said, could they be worse then the current group of Iraqi forces ? I doubt it. Regardless, Shias from both countries fighting ISIS Sunnis maybe a good thing. Now just the Iraqi Sunnis have to decide whose side they'd be on … Or have a 3 or 4 way, with the Kurds rounding out the pieces on the board ? Right now ISIS is the bigger, more current threat … At least you can talk to the Persians … whether they listen or not … |

The Geopolitical problem could be if Iran adds its natural resources (oil) with Iraq. That would conform an state to be in consideration. Not mentioning the Military stuff they can gain. Amicalement Armand |

You can talk to the Persians, but you can also talk to a brick wall too. Same difference, since neither really listen. |

As I said, if they listen or not … ISIS only understands the language of extreme violence … |
