Start off with a happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate this day of thanks. Last Friday at the weekly game club I have been fortunate enough to be invited to join, we were stumble bumbling our way through Star Fleet Battles. During the game I was doing my best to run (which must have not been too bad because I was asked to bring it again this Friday) our host brought out a copy of Starwar 2250. He said it was a space combat game he had for 30ish years and really wanted to play. I knew I recognized the title but I couldn't place it. Then he tossed out his 2nd edition copy of Starguard! and said it was the companion game to this. That's when it clicked for me and realized where I had heard of it. So anyways, after some discussion we thought about maybe buying into the two games with the sale going on and all over at tin-soldier. Well I managed to find a pretty good deal on a copy of 3rd ed Starguard! and a copy of the Orilla book. So finally my question is, as the title says, what are the differences between 2nd and 3rd if any? If there is major changes, which is the better gaming experience? I don't expect my books to arrive before Saturday (estimated due date) or maybe Monday with the holiday, to be able to compare them in person on our next game night. |

The earlier editions of the game get a lot of love. I found the last two iterations of the rules unplayable. A few of us have given it a go with no luck. There are a few threads to that extent if you search the boards for starguard. 3rd edition seems to be the most sought after…hence I have not found a copy to try. Blackwidowpilot is our local Starguard expert. Hopefully he will be along to chime in with a detailed answer. Matakishi's review of 5th edition: matakishi.com/starguard3.htm |
