USS Olympia – 1/232 Revell/Encore Figures – Pendraken Civil people – Musket Miniatures Sailors – Rod Langton Miniatures The USS Olympia was a protected cruiser that saw service in the US Navy from 1895 until 1922, and fought at the battle of Manila Bay (that took place in 1 May 1898), during the Spanish-American War This ship is still in "active service" nowadays, since it is used as a museum ship (Independence Seaport Museum) in city of Philadelphia (US state of Pennsylvania), although it seems that it needs urgent repairs.

That is lovely, and interesting to see her in the earlier grey rather than a predominantly white scheme. |

I visited this gem a few years ago and strongly recommend it. The restored inside is very surprising like a cruise ship for the officer's quarters; obviously at the time they underestimated the amount of damage artillery would do. The ratings living quarters look like an enlarged earlier sailing ship. It needs more repairs especially the turrets. I hope this ship is going to stay as one of the rare surviving from that time. Are you sure the funnel smoke would be white? |

The white-ochre scheme was for peace-time, the gray for war. Also, the windows (not leaded, just small panes in normal wood frames) were for comfort in normal cruising, they, along with the fancy fittings in officers' country, would have been struck below when the ship was cleared for action. |

True. They're still gloriously incongruous looking though. :-) |

This past May our combined gaming groups were able to do a Game Day on the Olympia on the Anniversary of the Battle of Manila Bay and I painted up a number of ships from Old Glory and a friend ran the game. It was surreal, playing the battle on the mess decks with tourists walking by and the Historical Interpreters standing over a nautical chart explaining the battle (and getting personal tours of the ship). We were then able to sleep on the ship and game all night. It was a fundraiser for the old gal to help her get much needed repairs to her below waterline hull and upper deck. It was a lousy night of sleep but we didn't care – we slept on the Olympia. I hope to do this again – Thanks Cliff and group. And yes I painted the smaller models in the white and ochre paint scheme – but I love the diorama. |

So, Rogues, what's the old girl's status re: the restorers vs. the breakers? |
