Gentlemen, I'm trying to confirm the type and/or manufacturer of the Saxon Artillery pieces from 1806 – 1809? Nafziger refers to the predominant piece as a "light 8 pounder". He suggests that for "the 1806 Campaign the Saxons had 106 guns of which only 6 were 12 pounders". Were the Saxon guns Prussian designed and made, Austrian designed and made or a uniquely Saxon design? Nick |

Before 1810 the Saxons had their own designs of equipment and ordnance , the M1772 Hoyer System. Some of it was inspired by other systems (such as a Gribeauval-style caisson)and was new and some was old ordnance on new carriages. In 1810 the new Raabe system was introduced. This was a more radical reorganisation. I recommend that you check sources such as the Calpe web-site which has information on the 1810 system and books such as 'Napoleonic Artillery' by Dawson, Dawson and Summerfield. If you can get the latter you will be well informed. |
