Was there any uniform or jacket color for treasure fleet naval crew? We're they dressed like pirates of the time or would they have an informal uniform? |

Sailors in the treasure fleet would likely have no uniform but would be dressed like typical spanish seamen. They did often carry a number of soldiers aboard though who would likely have had uniforms in the latter part of the 17th century and on. Guarda costas where essentially spanish privateers and would also likely have no uniform. |

Thanks Frantic. Exactly what I was looking for. Would a yellow jacket with red trim work for a few of the Uniformed crew with musket? |

On that I'm not really sure…but I'm still digging! I have seen art that depicts spanish marines with very light yellow, almost cream colored coats so that's possible. It is possible that the West Indian/florida uniform of blue with red trim was used since I believe some of the soldiers stationed on the ships where from the regular units in Havana, but I could be wrong on that. |

In the early modern era (don't know if it's still true) unbleached wool from Spanish sheep breeds was commonly dark brown. This is the color of a Franciscan monk's habit, or of the brown trousers commonly worn by soldiers in Spain during the Napoleonic wars. Some representations of Spanish sailors show this brown wool in wide use for jackets and trousers, where blue was thought of as the sailors' color in English speaking countries. If your child's a girl, you can bounce her on your knee, And if it be a boy, send the bastard out to sea! He'll wear bell-bottom trousers, a jacket of navy blue, And he'll climb up the riggin' like his Daddy used to do. |

I am going with brownish yellow with red trim for my spanish soldiers. No formal outfit other then the few in jackets as such. Post WSS I will go with white with blue trim, french Grey with blue trim. The White spanish coats with blue seems mid 17th to me. |
