I am emotionally drained. This is fracking glorious. I forgive the series all its mistakes, all its flaws, even the flaws of this episode. A roller-coaster. A masterpiece!

Bravo to the Danes for making it!HUZZZZZZZZAAAAAHAHHHHHHHHHH

I have been following the series every week, but view the episode every Tuesday morning. It digests better after a cup or two of coffee.

Fantastic and well worth watching. The scale of the battle is truly amazing.

Just watched it. Thanks for the link.

Now why can't the BBC do something like that from British history?

Are English subtitles available? I'm only just learning Danish, so…

KTravlos25 Nov 2014 3:12 a.m. PST

It will be aired by BBC 4 next year. Otherwise google is your friend, as amateur subtitles are out there. Due to the possible legality issues I am not linking to them. Personally I have watched the whole series in Danish and I speak not one word of it :p

the funny thing is that the Danes (or at least some of them) seem to hate it. At least those who post to IMBD. Too unfair to the danish nationalists (exaggerating to a point yes, but not unfair), too crude at points (yes, but nothing too much), too this , too that.

Ah people are never happy.

As i know danish history, i am totally irritated of the errors, but then its a film. But they can do the correct uniforms and weapons, but not take time to research battle formations, tactics etc thats hopeless. Next thing is horned viking helmets :). And then there is no recoil on guns, and exploding cannon balls, which will irritate any artillery expert. Apparantly also did the prussian artillery shoot smoking, burning things whch scream like new years fireworks.
But thats normal in films which any wargamer knows.
But a truly dramatic battle scene, which was in reviews in Denmark compared to battle scnes from the lord of the Rings.

Actually by 1864 shells were available as a artillery projectile, so you would get exploding shells.

The smoking burning things, were a bit weird. But I am not sure how a historical they are in the era of the rifled cannon.

but yes, no question about flaws, but I forgive them. It was so grand and sad.

hornblaeser25 Nov 2014 2:07 p.m. PST

The rifled guns shells exploded on impact, and were not lit :)
The danish unrifled guns used the traditional canister, shrapnell and solid balls.
Since they used magc in some scenes they could also have used the orgelespingol, which was an early machine gun, which were on station in Dybbøl. That would have been fun to see.
And the uniforms of both sides is just so nice.

Ah good points! Yes the magic was annoying. I also wanted more austrians than just weird burned hussar dude :p But eh. I am happy. Watching the 8th Brigade counter attack is enough!

And if you want to wargame it … may I modestly commend to you my scenario for Dybbol & Als in the BBB scenario book, "Bloody Big European Battles!"?

SSW Schleswig war Dybbol Als map by bbbchrisp, on Flickr

The storming of the redoubts would not be much fun to play on its own, being a simple frontal assault against entrenchments. But the BBEB scenario takes in the preliminary operations some weeks earlier, in which the Prussians drove in the Danish outposts so they could establish their siege lines. It also includes the subsequent Prussian landing on the island of Als two months later.

Combining all three actions as phases of a single scenario makes it much more mobile and interesting than a mere siege/storming, and all in an 11-turn game that can be played in under 3 hours.

@hornblaeser

'The rifled guns shells exploded on impact, and were not lit :)'

The Prussian shell exploded on impact and didn't 'fizz' in flight, The Austrian 4 and 8 pdr shells did 'fizz' in flight, I won't bore you with the details but basically the nose cone was ignited by the flame from the propellant, when it impacted a large ball bearing was displaced forward allowing the fizzing nose to ignite the main charge. A bit pedantic sorry but I couldn't resist.

Series finished. Will now patiently wait to watch with English subtitles. All in all a damn good series.
