Over the years I have accumulated a large pile of spare plastic 28mm bits and pieces; heads, arms, weapons, packs etc. In contrast I have no spare legs or torso's. I'm sure many other wargamers are in the same position. So is there a manufacturer out there who produces sprues of fairly generic legs and torso parts only? I would certainly buy a fair number of such sprues which would allow me to use other plastic bits to create more figures. The torso parts don't have to be detailed because I am happy to use green-stuff to model belts, lapels etc.

Have you tried Hoard o' Bits? Lots of stuff from various manufacturers:

Thanks for the replies. I like what Victoria Miniatures have and plan to place a small ‘trial' order to see how compatible they are with other manufacturers bits. There seems to be a real gap in the market for this kind of product, especially for more historical genres. Torso sprues for basic shell jackets, with and without cross belts. Maybe some bare chested torso sprues? Leg sprues would possibly be more diverse e.g trousered (with either boots or shoes), bare legged etc.
I also think there is a market for some basic, riderless horses. They would not require saddle furniture because most gamers could model saddle clothes, blanket rolls etc to suit their particular period of interest.
I hope some figure designer/producer will be motivated to make such products because I'm sure there is a market out there.

Snowydog;

I also think there is a market for some basic, riderless horses. They would not require saddle furniture because most gamers could model saddle clothes, blanket rolls etc to suit their particular period of interest.

You have some relief in your quest Sir! That I know of (and there certainly could be more) Conquest Games, Wargames Factory and Warlord Games do sell riderless horses. The CG horses are from their Norman range, are really very nicely done, and have minimal tack, blanket and harness. They would be very easy to add additional detail to or remove what's there and replace it. They are available for £3.50 GBP for a sprue of 3, and there are quantity deals up to 15 horses. If you need more you might try contacting CG and see if they have bulk pricing.

The WF horses are from their Ancient Persians, are completely free of tack or blanket or harness, so can be detailed to your hearts content, and 16 poses are possible with their sprue deal. These have been on special clearance for a long time now, so I don't know what their stock situation is, but I know someone who ordered these not too long ago. The WF sculpting style is very different from CG's, and their models do require a bit more filling and cleanup, but they can produce very nice models with a bit of work. You probably won't find a better value anywhere, at 12 horses for $5.98 USD, 50 cents a horse is hard to beat.

The Warlord Games horses are from their Pike & Shot range and have fairly minimal harness, tack and saddle. The saddle is a bit more than a blanket, but still pretty easy to remove. The reins and harness are pretty minimal and could be worked for pretty much any period. The pistol holsters are separate castings and can be added or not at your choice. They are £4.00 GBP for 4 horses, with no quantity or bulk deals offered. This makes tham slightly more expensive than CG if you buy larger quantities. The CG and Warlord horses mix pretty well as to size and style and both are (I believe) cast by Renedra so detail is excellent.

I don't know of either the Perrys or Fireforge Games offering separate horse. The Perrys do not do any "plain" horses that I'm aware of, the closest would probably be in their ACW range or draft horses. Fireforge do make unarmoured horses, both for their Mongols and their Sergeants, so it might be worth contacting them for more info. They are again cast by Renedra and look like they would mix well with CG and Warlord, especially if you were going to modify them to begin with.

Also, as to "bits" with legs and torsos: Wargames Factory offer another item in their clearance section worth looking at. Their basic Persian Infantryman, two to a sprue are available in a fantastic deal for 12 figures for $2.40 USD! You get equipment to make one an archer and one a spearman, but the basic middle eastern dress of tunic and trousers is so generic that you could easily change out some heads, add an AK-47 or period-correct similar weapon, and have a generic infantryman that could be used from Alexander's campaigns to today. If you are a fair hand with green stuff then the sky's the limit. If you were actually doing some type of hill tribe or desert army that was infantry-heavy, you could do a great collection at 20 cents per figure!

Good luck Sir!

I have no idea about Fireforge, but Perrys do indeed have plastic horses available separately (£3 for 3 horses):

These are the plastic horses that are included in their Mounted Men-at-arms (1450-1500) set. They have saddle and quite a bit of harness sculpted on.
