I participated in Operation Crossfire and it was just an amazing war-gaming experience. To say it was simply enjoyable is not doing it justice. The scenario I played was just brilliant and when added to the dynamic of being part of something broader that your decisions influenced.

The process deserves at least a pair on each team. I did really struggle to maintain proper comms with my CC (Steve you were brilliant) and Lloyd while concentrating on the actual tactical process. It didn't help that my opponent had to cancel and needed to be replaced with a real crossfire novice who needed my help with the rules (and I need a little more play time myself )

My comms were therefore very rushed and probably very inadequate…I do have to say; including the fact that I had to prepare the game and table that night and needed to start at 5:00am in western Canada here , my tired and confused state combined with all these other factors i.e. rushed disordered decision making actually, added to the authenticity of the entire "simulation" ☺

But all of this would have been little more than sadistic torture without the amazing organization and the brilliant scenario that had such depth and favour.

Anyway can't say enough good things about this event; I hope I get the opportunity to do this again although it wouldn't surprise me if Lloyd has enough after what must have been pure chaos. I'd highly recommend that other wargamers should experience this type of event if they ever get the opportunity.

Many thanks to Steve (who did an amazing job of commanding the allies and of course Michael who led the enemy Hun but who added so much to the event also. And of course my thanks to Lloyd for putting all his creative energy into doing this for others. I do hope you enjoyed the event also

I've added a link to a report of our own game…its lengthy and probably full of mistakes because I was half asleep when I did it and I'm honestly too tired to proof read it ☺

All the best

John

I agree it was a fun & well worth experience, I was umpire for the Fleet table. Although we kicked off at a more gentle midday. It was fascinating watching the comms between commanders on the ground & their C-in-C. Rumours of airstrikes & armour support coming to nothing because of problems at road junctions leading to the town.

It is an experience I would happily repeat. Of course once Nikolas has had time to recover.

I'll get my accolades in early before the rush.
An absolutely stunning set up and great AAR. I'm agog. I'm curious about the mechanics of "Crossfire". I gather it is played long distance by some players, given your obscenely early start time?

Panda,

Great table and figs, as always man. I thought that was pretty cool, or pretty messed up, that the German player had the armored reserve on his table, but he's not supposed to touch them!

Holy crap, did you really pull off an airborne drop in the middle of the game!? And you pulled off a crossfire in the middle of the town? Good work Panda, way to take advantage of the newbie AND make sure he never plays Crossfire again ;)

Good grief though, with the Tiger sneaking up on the Stuarts! And the Tiger "refused" to uses its bow MG on the sneaky bazooka team, eh? You Bleeped texter! You mean you forgot to tell the newbie the Tiger had an MG, or the Tiger could perform reaction fire on an infantry squad? And then you pull the ultimate in cheating moves, you let a child roll the dice; despicable… Your true colors shine brightly, Panda ;)

It looked to be a helluva fight, and a lot of fun; wish I was there man. Great stuff, I look forward to more batreps in the future.

V/R,
Jack

"I thought that was pretty cool, or pretty messed up, that the German player had the armored reserve on his table, but he's not supposed to touch them!"

I bet Rommel thought the same thing on June 6th :) but it really did add so much to the actual game. In fact looking at the Axis communications after the battle they're were so many other little details that were left out…(I forgot I had ATG's to the north for $%^# sake)

And hey didn't you read the report the Tiger fired twice at the Bazooka team…he refused to fire at the rifle team that I sent out ahead of it hoping to get a "no fire" …I got so lucky with the rolls on the encounter though. The MG shot twice at the bazooka team with 4 dice needing a 5 or a 6 wanting 2 hits each time. The bazooka had 2 shoots (after the Tiger missed he got another chance) and needed a 5 or 6 on the ACC dice and a 6 on the PEN dice…it was really stupid even attempting it…but it was just so satisfying to see it burn! The position of the Tiger on the bridge meant I couldn't go around it (to the rear armour) and nothing on the South side could get through because of the MG42 on the corner…I really thought it was going to rip my whole army apart. It was the best game I played especially the first two hours…I did get incredibly tired after that point.

Anyway good to see you back in the hunt…I've noticed your posts on any topic even remotely making a passing mention of a farm animal…poor Shaun can't even take out his enormous pig without ridicule and dirty comments (it was an impressive pig though)

Badgers25 Nov 2014 6:05 a.m. PST

Fantastic effort, the AAR is awesome! Hope there's another one soon that I can join.

Monophagos25 Nov 2014 4:23 p.m. PST

It was quite the experience. Lovely looking table and toys. I got creamed in my game sadly!

War Panda25 Nov 2014 5:31 p.m. PST

@Badgers I would so highly recommend it. Was as close to the feel of real war as a game could possibly get.

@Monophagos Well you're in good company I lost out on every objective myself…

Thanks for the comments guys :)

Shaun Travers28 Nov 2014 3:52 p.m. PST

A great report; you had more pigs on the table than me, but mine was larger!

War Panda29 Nov 2014 9:16 a.m. PST

Shaun, I literally wept when I saw the size of your pig…I felt so inadequate …thanks for bringing it up :)
Thanks for the comments (on the blog…not the boasting of the size of your pig :) )

Alright you two, let's get back to war gaming! If you want to compare hogs, that's a different forum.

Jack

Oh yeah…and ahem…what forum would that be..out of interest? Can you post a link maybe…?

not sure what happened there?

This is "the miniatures page"; I think we can discuss small hogs here :-) Jack, are you jealous as you do not have enough hog to put on a table?
