Hey Folks, I'm looking for ranges of dwarves compatible in size with GW's LoTR. I'm also looking for bargains, so I'm naturally drawn to some of the old 25mm lines. Anyone know how GW dwarves compare to Denizen and Asgard. They both look to have some very nice sculpts in the lines. Especially Denizen, though I would not want to purchase if they weren't compatible. If no one knows for sure, would anyone with Asgard or Denizen care to give me the mm measurement from sole to eye-line? Lastly, if anyone has any other suggestions, I'd love to hear them. The only ones I'm not particularly interested in is Ral Partha. They're lovely figures, but my buddy already has a batch painted up. Thanks! |

I've never seen them in person but for a bargain you can't beat EM-4's plastic dwarves. There's only three poses but with a bit of creativity and some extra weapons and shields for variety, they look pretty nice. The EM-4 website Has a link to a page that shows pictures of someone that did these kind of conversions. The person also mixed the plastics with metal Vendel dwarves (now owned by Sgt Major Minis). |

Denizen are slightly smaller but of a similar heft to the LOTR dwarfs, so they mix fine, there is also the old pre-slotta Citadel Fantasy Tribe Dwarves that match reasonably well as well. |

If on a budget, 1/72 scale plastic figures offer quite a variety of poses, and figures, for little money. Here are some links to review: Caesar fantasy figures and Dark Alliance Dwarves (clearly LotR movie-based designs). Try Google's image search for more images of the figures. The Dark Alliance Warg Rider sets of Orcs make great Goblins (think, Gygax's 1977 Monster Manual for sizes), though the Wargs are on the smallish side, for 25-28mm figures. The best prices I've found for these figure sets, are from Taiwan sellers on e-Bay: typically they run around $12 USD-$14, delivered, per set. Delivery has always been similar to US-based sellers for speed -- never had any issues, and I've ordered around 4-6 sets from Taiwan, so far. Cheers! |

FreddBlogs, Thanks! Do you think the cast-on base on the denizen would bring them to the same height as the LoTR dwarves? I really like the denizen ventauran figs I have, so if they size is close, I'm sure the sculpts will be good. Sgt Slag, I'm sticking with 28mm to retain some measure of compatability with the LoTR figs I have and the rest of my collection. The Caesar look is not to my liking, but the Dark Alliance orcs look like they'd make great goblins. If I can't find cheap LoTR goblins, I may buy some of those! Black Cavalier, The EM4 dwarves are nice figs and a great deal, but don't really have the proportions and look to be compatible with LoTR. I painted up a rank a while back… link …and I think they'd be great for WHFB or other games. Anyone, The Vendel dwarves look pretty good. What's the height (to the eye) for those? Anyone know about Asgard? |

Have you considered Mithril Miniatures figures? Although the range is nominally 32mm the dwarves match GW figures pretty well, both in height and proportions. |

The Mithril miniatures are great, as are the Red Box games figs, but I'm looking for semi-bargain prices so I'm hunting down older and more obscure lines. |

The Asgard dwarves are available from a couple of sources. Viking Forge has them at $1.25 USD each. I think they might be a shade too chunky for you, but here's the catalogue page: link |

The Mithril ones are pretty much the same height as the LOTR ones. Unfortunately they are about the same price if not more. |

Jack, Do you happen to have the sole-to-eye height for the Asgard dwarves? |
Lee Brilleaux | 25 Nov 2014 3:22 p.m. PST |
I don't. I have some mixed in with my other dwarves, which are a mix of GW Warhammer, Foundry (very large and round) Alternative Armies etc. They are among the smaller of these, but still bigger than, say, Denizen, which are lovely but too small for my use. What I don't have is any GW LOTR dwarves, since they don't fit with what I have. That's really what would help. |

Could you measure one of the Asgard dwarves for me? I measured a LoTR dwarf last night, so that would be enough to determine suitability. |

Let me see if I can sort one out from the vast horde -- In the meantime I asked Loren at Viking Forge and he said " Since many of the GW artists once worked for Asgard, I think they would work." |

Okay, DW-02 (the axeman) is 15-16mm sole to eye, while DW-07 the swordsman, is 14-14mm to the eye (but he's leaning forward). They are clearly smaller than most of the Warhammery-style dwarves. I like them. |

Thanks, MJS, I really appreciate it! That's just what I needed to know. I just measured the metal Gimli from the first LoTR Fellowship set and he's about 20mm to the eye. I think I'll have to give the Asgard guys a pass. Oddly, Viking Forge doesn't appear to accept paypal or any kind of online payment. A real old-school mail-your check kind of place! I did manage to find a picture of Denizen next to a LoTR human figure and while it's a bit smaller than a LoTR dwarf, a unit of them probably wouldn't look out-of-place on the same table. |
