I'm doing a project using 1/72 scale soft plastics on multi-figure bases, which I have cut from Bass Wood. I' almost at the point of gluing the first units.

I've bought some Lock-tite special plastic glue to use to assemble some of the figures, but it's expensive and I don[t want to waste it.

A few years ago I had glued soft plastic to Mat-board, and they seemed to have held up well (sitting in a box on a shelf). I used regular super-glue for that.

Should I just use regular super glue for attaching soft plastic to Bass Wood?

I don't know about super glue plastic and wood bonding so I cant speak with any authority on that, but personally I would use a product called Weldbond for a plastic to wood bond.

I use regular Elmer's glue to attach the figures to mat board. I then Elmer's glue the mat board to the bass wood bases and then flock. I use 1/4 thick bass wood to give them some weight as they get pushed around the table. Also gives something to hold to so players don't handle the figures when they move the bases.

Alternatively, I like to super glue the figures to the heavy magnetic bases made by Gale Force 9 and stick magnetic backing to the bass wood bases. Helps when re-basing or for figure removal games. Gale Force 9 seems to be getting out of the business though. You've just prompted me to post asking about other manufactures of magnetic bases. Thanks!

I would recommend regular PVA glue (aka white glue). Cheap, easy to use and provides reasonably strong bond.

I have had good luck gluing soft plastic to various bases using rubber cement. Yes rubber cement. I spread some on the figure base, then some on the wood. Let dry, then second coat on figure, then attach. I have some airfix ancient Britain's that I based it this way in 1980 that are still attached. This is a little bit flexible so the figures don't snap off like they do with a hard glue. Do any flocking after you attach the figures. Use Aileens glue, better than Elmers, cover the base and the figures bases then add flocking.

Super glue works well for plastic to wood. But beware, the bond is instant, so get the positioning right the 1st time or you have to break the wood to get the figure off.

I am in the good old Elmer's Glue camp.

Back when Airfix figures were the bulk of my armies, used Elmer's White Glue (any PVA would be the same). Just a smear over the base top and place the figure. Once dry, go back and run a bead around the figure's base and then right over the top of two opposite corners. This has held them for 40 years now. (ouch! that hurt to think about)
I do not think you can possibly find a less expensive way mount your figures.

I do similar to bob,I cover the bases and flock them in sand, then paint then use regular flock,If that dont hold em on,I dont know what else will.

Thanks for the help everyone. I think I'll give Elmer's a try. I was planning to 'flock" with sand, since it's more or less a desert project.

PVA/white glue is way best.
It is so resilient that the figures won't snap off.

The only negative thing is the drying time.

I use Bostick/UHU – Not a permanent bond but perfectly adequate for gaming (especially after coat of Basetex) and the amount of rebasing I've had to do over the years being able to remove stuff if you want to isn't a bad thing …

I use hot glue these days. PVA works well, but HG is quicker. I then cover them in PVA and sand, so they don't come off unless I chisel them…

I used two part epoxy glue for my WWI plastics to basswood bases.

Wallpaper border adhesive. It's white glue on steroids and intended to attach wallpaper border (which is often vinyl) to wall surfaces. You can get it at any home decorating or home improvement store in sizes from little tubes(2 ounce?) to half gallon tubs.

I'm in trouble here – I'm trying to get Airfix soft plastic French Guard to stick to 4 Ground MDF bases. Superglue isn't sticking them – why not?

Don't use super glue

Use ordinary wood glue/PVA/white glue

Or use a glue gun – hot glue works just fine

Super glue will struggle with mdf and Airfix

furgie03 Feb 2016 12:59 p.m. PST

OK – wood glue has done the trick – great stuff – thanks.
