Old, but quite interesting. "The most well known type of Catalan soldier of the Middle Ages (and maybe, of all the times) is, with no doubt, the 'almogāver', an irregular light infantry combatant inherited from the Reconquista which, turned into the core of a mercenary company led by the famous Roger de Flor, terrified the Byzantine provincies of Anatolia and Thrace and finally took possession of the Frankish duchies of Athens and Neopatria. The almogāver way of life ended in the 15th century prior to the end of the Reconquista, but during the early stages of the Reapers' War there was a revival of the irregular guerrilla inspired, at least in spirit, by the remembrance of the legendary Roger de Flor and his men. The new almogāver combatant was probably a military-oriented adaptation of the typicall mountain bandit and highwayman of the Principality, called 'bandoler', and was taken into consideration by the 'Junta de Guerra' (the section of the 'Diputaciķ General' in charge of the miliraty issues) when a Catalan army began to be organized in september of 1640. These almogāvers were then described as 'foot soldiers armed with a 6-hands long firearm, a 'pedrenyal' (petronel), a pistol and a 'panart' (cutlass). They wear, besides their ordinary dress, a buff coat and a shoulder belt to carry their pair of handguns…" Full article here link
