Another old but interesting history article here. "In the warfare of the 17th century, both in wartime and in peace, desertion was the main source of casualties for any army, as well as the main cause for its breakup. Hardship, lack of pay and fear were often what drove the soldiers to desert, but in some cases there were other reasons. That of the Portuguese soldiers enlisted in the Spanish army under the Marquis of Los Vélez is a good example. A whole tercio made of Portuguese recruits, perhaps 1,000 or even 1,200 men at all, was present at the Catalan front when Duke João II de Bragança revolted at Lisbon against the Spanish Crown and appointed himself king of Portugal…" link Full text here link Amicalement Armand |
