Today we did a Coastal Forces game at the club, attacking a British convoy with German MTB's

Very nice- can I ask who makes the ship models?

Joep12322 Nov 2014 9:35 p.m. PST

everything was very well done, right down to the gunfire and explosion effects.
What rules and what scale ships did you use and as Paul asked…who made the ships.
Thanks;
Joe

There is a link to the rules on the blog. My favorite fast play small boat rules. And at a great price, too.

The ships are the Skytrex 1:600 Coastal forces range. A ton weight to lug about, but they do the biz!
Skytrex went out of business (sob sob!) a while ago, but I believe can be got from someone who took over the moulds.
The rules, as Cold steel (cheers pal!) said- are on my clubs downloads page – link
-and are free to download, as are all my current sets. I am always happy when people enjoy using my rules, they are all just sets I do for my friends and myself at the club!

As ever, thanks for all the kind comments, they are appreciated!

I believe the 1/600 ships are now available from Heroics and Ross

Cheers Jarrovian! – I may be tempted to expand my range at some time! – The Pacific beckons!

PT Dockyard also makes 1/600 coastal forces.

Yes, PT Dockyards' ships are excellent too, more extensive, if a little lighter, and keep an eye out for second hand SDD ships which did some excellent models (no longer in production by Stroghold Miniatures – due to ill health?, I think)

The Skytrex 1/600 range is indeed available again from Heroics and Ros. I had a chat with them at Warfare last weekend, there are thoughts on expanding the range once they have consolidated what they have taken on. Good news :)

Bellbottom23 Nov 2014 9:50 a.m. PST

Thanks for that David, perhaps they could speak to Stronghold about acquiring their moulds.

Grignotage23 Nov 2014 10:38 a.m. PST

Cool game, thanks for the report. I think coastal naval stuff is something I want to get into. Any books you suggest I read? General histories, campaigns, memoirs, etc.

Sir Peter Scott, the naturalist, commanded one of the Grey class steam gunboats in the Channel and the bay of Biscay and wrote a book about it
'Battle of the Narrow Seas: A History of the Light Coastal Forces in the Channel and North Sea, 1939-45,
See also 'Flag 4: The Battle of Coastal. Forces in the Mediterranean 1939-1945' by Dudley Pope.
Check out PT Dockyards page, I think he has a bibliography there.

"Thanks for that David, perhaps they could speak to Stronghold about acquiring their moulds."

I dream of that happening. I made a number of the masters for the old SDD range that became the Stronghold range.

Hi Grignotage!- I have gathered several books on the subject,I thoroughly recommend browsing through book markets etc.

One I got a little while ago was 'Coastal Convoys 1939-1945' by Nick Hewitt (ISBN 184415861-6)
Jarrovians suggestions are very good too!

Sir Peter Scott's ship was the Grey Goose……topical…….😁

Grignotage23 Nov 2014 2:46 p.m. PST

Thanks for the book recommendations!

Thanks for sharing your battle report.

Looks like a fun game.

I'd love to see the SDD range become available again as well, so hopefully someone will talk to the Stronghold proprietor (Dave, if I recall correctly), and strike a deal for the molds, since they've been sitting idle for far too long, e.g. more than a decade, or 15+ years, IIRC.

Hopefully, they are still usable, or someone can pop out a mini or two from each, and make new molds.

Cuchulainn23 Nov 2014 11:42 p.m. PST

The snag with 1/600 for me would be the size of table needed to play the game. I use 1/1200, and there are times when we run into trouble with lack of playing surface even in that scale. Now I do admit I haven't looked at the rules used in this game yet, so I can't comment on this game properly, but looking at the photos would tend to suggest that's a pretty big table being used there.

The game itself looks like a bundle of fun, the ships look fantastic and I've really enjoyed the battle report.

Hi Cuchulainn, the table was 12 x 4 – fyi.

We have played attacks on German convoys on a 6 x 4 easily. it just depends how big you want your convoy to be….!!!!

I am glad you all liked the AAR!

ptdockyard24 Nov 2014 6:38 p.m. PST

Hmm… looks like I will have to start the build sheds up again.

..and I may be looking at your excellent range too..when I have time to paint them up!!

Thanks for making such a nice bunch of little ships!

ptdockyard25 Nov 2014 5:36 p.m. PST

No sweat. It keeps me out of trouble :)
