Some brief notes on my first week playing with Galleys and Galleons……

Agreed on all counts. I am enjoying the rules too, although I lack your hairy sea-monster (lol)

I'm curious what era you tried in your playtest. Only Warlock wrote about a xebec vs an Indiaman, and I did a playtest with a pirate junk trying to intercept two merchant junks (remarkable mainly in how many rules I got wrong). What sort of engagement did you set up?

I did a pursuit with both ships facing west with the wind coming from the North. Ships were separated by about 16" with the Indiamen having a 1 Long move lead onto the board. The Xebec was to windward.

I set up the merchants reaching, then the pirates got to shift the wind so the merchants were close hauled. The merchants had to sail from one corner of my square card table to the other, the pirates came from another corner sailing a broad reach. I started about 26 inches apart.

I don't have a fuzzy sea monster but my ships do suffer from strong windy conditions. I should add some weight.

I've played a number of games using a variety of ships (started with a 1-on-1 between a couple of brigs and moved on from there), also getting into the use of terrain with some inshore actions and actions involving bastions (for which I really don't like the firing arcs – played with restricted arcs and found that much more satisfying).

I'm using Peter Pig 1/450 models in the main. The models and the rules seem to sit very nicely with each other.

I'm glad DM is playtesting, the rules will certainly benefit from his input..

I'm eager to see the finished product, if you need a captain any time soon Warlock just let me know :)
