Blah blah blah who cares about Yamato vs Iowa. Much more interesting to argue about the Fuso vs the Texas!! Who do you think wins an early war slugging match and why? |

Assume in early 1942 when she escorted the Marines bound for Guadalcanal to Panama she went all the way there and encountered a Japanese task force with Fuso offshore. You could even posit a Lexington/Texas vs Shoho/Fuso fight. A bunch of old armored gals slugging it out just north and east of the island. |

Fuso had a larger displacement but Texas' superstructure was better protected (I think) and she had good fire control. |

I think the Aleutians would be the best excuse for such a match-up. The invasions of Attu and Kiska were supported and covered by old battleships, and the Fuso and Yamashiro were stationed in northern waters at the time. Texas, unfortunately, spent most of the war in the Atlantic. |

I would go with the Texas, radar makes all the difference. Plus that damn pagoda totally destroyed what was a beautiful ship. She deserves to lose, damn it! |

"radar makes all the difference" Yup, Guadalcanal showed that in spades :) |

I ran this Scenario " Midway, the Battleship Action" at Fall-in 2014. It is a fall back scenario if I can not come up with something new for Coldwars. It is actually the Aleautian Screening Force vs Task Force 1. It includes the 2 CLTT for the Japanese and USS Long Island with Buffalos. OOB Japan 4 x BB 2 x CLTT 12 x DD 2 x AO OOB USA 2 x BB 1 x CVE 3 x DD 3 x BB 2 x DD Played using SeeKrieg. We had 17 players and it was a lot it fun. |

I once commanded Fuso in a Fletcher Pratt battle back in the early 1980s and she was a real handful. Her broadside – when it hit a target – was formidable. I suspect that she could have given USS Texas a run for her money. |

They have directly comparable 14" gun layouts but the Fuso has more numerous secondary batteries. |

This one is easy, everyone knows you don't mess with Texas. |

Very true. But it did make all the difference when the squids learned how to use it. There we several encounters when US tin cans used them to devastating effect with torps…. In 1943! |

But it did make all the difference when the squids learned how to use it. Sure did. When they got better radar, torpedoes that worked, makes all the difference |
