I've had the full ruleset for the last 15 years and never played it. I have seen it played at cons and I don't want to fork out the $$ for Seekrieg 5. I have kids in College.

What do you guys think of it?

Played it back when it was current, so 1983 or so. VERY complex. I mean, 47 different die rolls to determine that you hit the potato locker for no effect, complex. At least, that's how I remember it being. It's probably not quite that bad, but waayy more complicated than your ACTA:SFB game.

I've seen people using it for destroyer and torpedo boat actions, apparently with success.

Not sure how it would play out with a large force of big units and escorts.

So doing a Coral Sea battle on two tables might be challenging. Hmmm.

I'm not against complexity if it does a good job and is fun. Maybe I'll try a River Platte scenario as a test.

BrianW I do have Mongoose ' s Victory at Sea rules which use the ACTA rules for WWII Naval warfare. My only beef with them is the over lethality of Torpedoes. Manley wrote an addendum that helps correct the issue though.

I also have Naval Thunder and need to give that a run through.

I have the complete 4th edition set and while it is not simple it is nowhere near the complexity (or realism) of SeeKrieg 5. My group before I moved played large games with multiple battleships to a conclusion in an evening, no problems. The gamers in my new town claim to be "navigationally challenged." So we occasionally play Naval Thunder since it is easier.
