Has anyone had a chance to have a read? What do you think? Are there any reviews online, I'm interested in the rules and I'm wondering what folks are saying about them.

Thanks

Good set of rules. Depending on your preferred rules writing style, they may (or may not!) seem a little disorganized.

I found it to be a fun game.

The editor's comments make me say: Ouch! If one cannot get a clear idea how to base figures, what's the use of trying to learn any other rules in the set? And if the Editor is right, how many of us are going to be willing to have differing numbers of figures on bases depending on the unit?

MH Dee20 Nov 2014 4:21 p.m. PST

I'm ordering them tomorrow. Want to get into AWI, just need to decide on a basing system to cover as many potential rules as possible. I've already got British Grenadier, and I'll pick up that Black Powder supplement…

So I was thinking 4 on 40x40mm with a few on 20x40mm to make 4 figure and 6 (4+2) figure bases for BG. So that should be flexible enough….?

I have played these rules and why they eventually played out fine I still think the Black Powder supplement, "Rebellion" is the rules I will use. I am also new to the era and I found Rebellion much more helpful to a new player.

Yeah.I'm going to pick that up for the info contained at least. Apparently it's quite comprehensive.

It is not a figure removal system. You need to base your figures in a manner that will let you use all the formations in the game for that type. After that, figure number on the bases are window dressing.

Oh, one thing that also bothered me a bit was that the command stand is always in the middle of the unit. Even in March column. I understand why that game bit was in there, but you could always have said make all measurements from the center of the unit. It just looked wrong to have the unit in column with out the standards up front.

I was ready to jump on the Kindle version when released last Tuesday but after reading the reviews, I may pass. Not sure I like units having so many actions in their activation. Being able to fire 3 times is a bit much.

Being able to fire 3 times is a bit much.

It's actually not that bad. Especially if I am rolling the dice for you. grin

You have to spend your move actions to reload (usually 3) and your combat actions to shoot/melee (also usually 3) and you hit on a 5 or better. So, yeah. If you gave up maneuvering, you could shoot 3 times. It takes 3 hits to cause a reduction in morale and you can only lose 1 step per turn. Excess hits are discarded. Finally, morale hits can be removed/rallied off.

45thDiv is right about the command stand. Looks a little silly in the middle of the column.

Any comments on how long an Average game takes to play?

45thdiv24 Nov 2014 5:31 a.m. PST

In the beginning, at least 3 hours. If you have played a few times, maybe 2 hours.

Just got these on Amazon for 11 quid…

Old Contemptibles24 Nov 2014 11:24 p.m. PST

I must of missed something. Why do you have your command in the middle of the column? Don't tell me you measure from the middle of the column.

mashrewba02 Dec 2014 11:04 a.m. PST

On a first read through I found it all rather abstract, confusing and unengaging whereas Rebellion is IMHO excellent.
It reminded me of the massive disappointment I felt about FOG Ancients.
There isn't a single Perry or Foundry figure, which makes a change although they had lots of pictures of the Osmonds -sorry I mean the Front Rank 40mm militia figs.

Rev Zoom13 Dec 2014 7:27 a.m. PST

I put it back on the shelf after I read through it. What got me was a) the indecisive determination of how many figures are on a stand or how many stands in a regiment; and, b) unless I read it wrong, that all units seem to start out at the same morale level. Thus British Grenadiers and American Continentals or Militia have the same initial morale. Balls. Now, maybe I missed something; if so, please enlighten me. I also don't like the non removal of figures, although I can live with it ala Might of Arms, I just don't like it. But, the general impression just left me feeling like Valley Forge in the winter of '77.

brass104 Jan 2015 5:39 p.m. PST

Strange. I had no problem figuring out how to base my miniatures. As to the morale levels, I was taken aback too, but the units that you would expect to have lower morale have advanced rules governing their reaction to various morale checks. I'm going to have to provide every figure for any game I play, so no figure removal is fine by me; the guys I game with have fingers like Vienna sausages and the reflexes of three-toed sloths, so the less they handle my miniatures, the better I like it. grin
