I am thinking of setting up a fictious 19th century campaign for two of my friends. They will move the armies and make the strategic decisions though email and Facebook, but I will fight the battles.

I have the following rules systems at my disposal

Neil Thomas 19th century
Black Powder
1859/1864 Grand Tactical Rules

My goal is too keep the forces at their disposal small. More like the Carlist Wars, rather than 1866. Think Baden vs. Wutemburg, or Saxony vs. Hanover. A couple of divisions to each side. Thus a mini war.

Which rules do you think are the best for solo fighting the battles? Also any suggestions for campaign rules, that are not too involved, and preferably free or pdf available would be appreciated (I have the Paddy Griffith generalship game, but I fear it may be too much for them)

Not sure if any of the rules on Two Hour War Games can be adapted to your needs but thought I would toss that into the "fermentation of thought" process.

Thanks Mute. I have tried some of there stuff, but they did not give me the joy they give others.

And finding what makes us happy is elemental.

Good luck, let us know what works for you and your friends, please.

Piquet Field of Battle is excellent for solo games not free though but worth every penny.

If you joined the Piquet Yahoo group you will find variants of rules players have produced that perhaps you could download and adapt.

Good luck with it.

Oh Bug-ger thank you for the recommendation. I am ashamed to say I used to have it and I sold it. I just could not build up the forces I wanted for, and could not warp my head around its mechanics. This was before I learned that there is this thing called 10 and 6mm miniatures :p

Bob Cordery has a few very good rules for the period you mention. Many are very solo friendly, the mechanisms are easy to pick up as well. The links to them are at the top of his blog here: link

A second thought then KT do a search for 'pony wars rules variants' and with a bit of luck you will find a C19th rule set. One side is on automatic pilot while you play the other one.

You might be able to utilise that.

Yes, – agree with Ogdenlulimus. Bob Cordery's rules are free and he usually plays solo.

Here's a free set for Napoleonic campaigns that can probably be easily tweaked for a smaller scale ACW game. Might still be too complicated for your friends though – but it is free!
