…4x4 self-propelled howitzer Fire Assault Vehicle. "At the 10th International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition, on the booth of Poly Technology, China Defense Industry unveils the 15P, a new high-maneuverability fire assault vehicle equipped with a 105mm howitzer mounted at the rear of 4x4 light truck chassis. The Type 15P is a light 4x4 non-protected combat vehicle developed by the Sichuan Aerospace Industry Corporation (SCAIC) based on the chassis of a Shaanxi Automotive SX2110C cross-country truck chassis. With this new vehicle, Chinese Defense Industry provides a new type of light howitzer which can be used by airborne troops or that can be rapidly deployable by military transport aircraft. The 15P vehicle uses an open top architecture with any protection against firing of small arms and shell splinters. At the front of the vehicle, there is two seats, one for the driver and one for the commander…"

An awfully light vehicle for repeatedly absorbing that kind of recoil |

That's what the big honking muzzle brake is for. Besides, it's a 105mm gun, which can get away with a towed mounting that weighs all of 4000lbs (L118 Lightweight Gun, the US M119 is 4700lbs). Also, that truck is deceptively small-looking. According to the article, the whole truck as pictured weighs 15 tons. Not exactly "light," even by American definitions, as it weighs as much as an MATV. Personally, I'd want dual rear axles and maybe a tag-axle (retractable non-powered, non-steering axle used on big trucks to lower their per-tire weight) on a vehicle that heavy. |

If it's an airdroppable vehicle I suspect it's not intended for sustained artillery fire. It's more of a rapid-reaction piece you put into the fight while rolling up the real batteries. |

Hi all, I do not want to add my part to the Chinese bashing which occasionally happens on TMP. At last I like some of their equipment like the Type 89 APC, especially the look of it. On the other hand this article makes me wonder a bit as it states that a new type of light howitzer is provided. The gun mounted to the truck looks like a copy of the OTO Melara Mod 56 light/pack howitzer to me. This may be a fine gun (I do not have any experience with it) and had some success but new? It dates back to the 1950s and I regard this as rather aged. Cheers, Benjamin |
