I am currently drawing up a spreadsheet charting the lineage of Bavarian Regiments (as you do !) and would be grateful for any help you can give to clarify the origins of one Regiment in particular.

Essentially, I am trying to understand the relationship (if any) between the following :

a. The 'Royal-Baviere' Regiment which was raised in 1709 and remained in French Service through to the Revolution and beyond;

b. The 'Baviere' Regiment which was raised in 1706 and re-named 'Royal-Baviere' in 1709 but went on to form part of the Palatine / Bavarian army (becoming the 4. Infanterie-Regiment 'Salern' in 1804).

Thank you !

Following is the Regtl. history of the 4th Bavarian Regt.
link

On p. xix is a list of the Inhaber and names of the Regt. from 1706 to 1869. It was only named 'Royal-Baviere' between 1709 – 1716.

Susane's 'Histoire Infanterie Francaise' Vol. 7 p.263 has a history of the French 'Royal-Baviere' It was formed from two cos. of 'Garde de l'electeur' and 6 from the Alsace Regt.
link

Both list Max. Emanuel as the Colonel of the two Regts.
