As you may have gathered from the couple [*cough*] of posts I've made on the subject I've got into high level Napoleonics using Sam Mustafa's LGG- each base is 1 division.

I'm picking Orbats to help me get the right balance of troops, though I won't be bound by it – its a ratio thing rather than a recreation.

For the French and Russian I am using Borodino (the French are just 36 bases, plus Artillery).

What battle (of the 15 years) do people suggest for Austrians?

Gnu200018 Nov 2014 1:30 p.m. PST

Wagram

I second Wagram. A lot of the other big battles (Austerlitz, Leipzig) Austria was allies with other powers.

Bandolier18 Nov 2014 3:05 p.m. PST

I third Wagram.

LGG? Sounds interesting, where can I find them?

I also second Wagram, I love the 1809 campaign.

I would go for Aspern-Essling

unless you prefer the unique mix of Lanwehr/Line of Wagram.

At the scale of 1 base equals a division there are really only a couple of possibilities: Wagram & Aspern-Essling. Both are fabulous actions to re-fight and the strongly contrasted operational situation for each of these battles, although fought only a few weeks apart, yields a really different feel and experience.

Sacile & Piave, the 2 major actions in northern Italy in 1809, though really interesting battles might not be suited to such a high level scale.

I used the OOB from the start of the Danube campaign (1809)

Jozis, at the start it says

so it appears I can send it for noncommercial use, and you are bound by the same, and so on.

My email is @gmail.com, the name I use here as my name, doesn't matter if there is a '.' between last and hussar.

Its only 12 pages, easy to pick up, some interesting subtleties. Its designed to fight the battles for a campaign, our test run took only a couple of hours. Even massive battles won't take all day because of the clever time keeping mechanism: each taken players roll dice to see how many action points they have. A running total is kept, and when the total passes a certain amount (140 for summer, for instance) that is the last turn, and night falls. The players then decide whether to stay or retreat. 2 'stays' and there is another day. An average general gets 2d6 AP, a Great one gets 2d10.

Combat is bringing divisions into contact (1"=150-200 yards), artillery has a range of 6 or 9, but that is the big concentrations- divisional guns are part of the divisional base. So not counted separately.

Terrain features are only the major things, not every copse or hamlet. La Hate Saint would not show up, apart from as decoration!

The bit between the grand strategic map an the table – manoeuvring the last few of miles is the reason for this

The idea is you can play a complete game, and still have time for the bookkeeping and strategic manoeuvre.

I am basing my units on those that were at Wagram . Histoire and Collections do an excellent book for Wagram . The Essling one which is in their smaller sized paperback series is also worth buying IMO as you can get this and the Wagram book very cheap second hand. Once bought you can never put them down .

Murvihill19 Nov 2014 10:42 a.m. PST

Leipzig.

Thanks all. Pasted the Wargram one into Word today. Expect questions because at a quick glance there appear to be combined cavalry/infantry divisions!

I'm not looking to refight the battle, it's to get a believable orbat. If I do fight it, it will be against Borodino French!
