Fortunately my varnish disasters have been far and few between but I got caught out last week and thought I should share a warning.
In previous posts I have extolled the virtues of Winsor & Newton Silver Ink as a silver paint – good colour and thin smooth coverage – and I still like the finish it gives.
The previous evening, I had completed a 28mm WSS French general, resplendent in a Gardes Françaises uniform, and was now ready to be varnished. I was applying the Galeria Matt Acrylic with a brush when I noticed things seemed a bit murky. I wiped the brush and thought I've not used any grey this evening and then, on closer inspection, the enormity hit me – the silver had lifted and was now spread in silver particles all over the figure.
I dragged as much of the varnish off as possible, but there was no going back. I set the figure aside to dry over night and applied a fresh coat of black gesso. I'll start to repaint next week as I can't face it just yet. In the meantime I've purchased a jar of GW silver on the basis that their gold is 'safe-to-go' so the silver should be OK too.
I have always used Humbrol 'Clear Coat' gloss and had no problems. With my first venture into 28mm for many years I decided to matt varnish and the thought that I might get a different reaction never entered my mind.
