Doesn't have to be military related – could be Solaris. I'm not totally sure for myself anymore, but to get the ball rolling I'm going to say that right now this minute I'd say Metropolis. That could easily change by tomorrow. |

Still a toss-up for me: either "Forbidden Planet" (1956), or "Aliens" (1986). |

Depending what day you catch me on, it's either Blade Runner or 2001…. |

Favourite is hard, although no Science Fiction films make my top ten films list at all. Some which I used to think were great haven't aged well, but thinking of the number of times I have re-watched particular films it would have to be…. The Empire Strikes Back. although Total Recall and Aliens give it a run for its money. A few of the more thoughtful ones I enjoyed were Strange Days, The Day the Earth Caught Fire, the remake of Solaris, Blade Runner in various cuts and Dark Star. I am one of the sad few who actually liked Dune, in all its insane glory. |
20thmaine | 17 Nov 2014 5:20 a.m. PST |
I very nearly said The Day the Earth caught Fire. Dune is very fine in places. It gains from repeated views. |

I saw Forbidden Planet when it first came out in 1956; I was 10 at the time and I've been hooked on sci-fi ever since. There was very little SF in the UK for many years, and if you said you liked it you were often regarded as being a bit weird – that didn't really change much until Star Wars came along. |
Wackmole9 | 17 Nov 2014 5:23 a.m. PST |
Forbidden Planet is my favorite |
Axebreaker | 17 Nov 2014 5:25 a.m. PST |
That depends on what film impacted me the most and not my current favourite. There is no question Star Wars had the biggest impact on me when I was a kid seeing it for the first time in "77 and then Empire and Return. Star Wars aside then Aliens tops the list. Christopher |
rvandusen | 17 Nov 2014 5:26 a.m. PST |
I would say either Alien(s) or John Carpenter's The Thing. |
Cuchulainn | 17 Nov 2014 5:28 a.m. PST |
The original The Day The Earth Stood Still is well up on my list. Star Trek: The Wrath Of Khan (I'm a bit ST fan) presses all the right buttons too, and Aliens has to make my top three. What order they come in depends on my mood. |

'Flash Gordon' from the 80's. Cheesy to be sure, but I watch it every time it comes on TV. |

Fifth Element. The villain and the hero never confront each other, they literally walk past each other at a elevator. I like the visuals and Milla. Reminds me of early Traveller I used to run. I've seen all the classics waaaay too much. |
Frederick | 17 Nov 2014 6:42 a.m. PST |
Blade Runner for first, Fifth Element for runner-up When it comes to atmosphere, Blade Runner sets it up like no other |

Serenity, District 9, Alien, Terminator 1 & 2 I enjoyed Battle for L.A. and Edge of Tomorrow too. The former for its old-school war movie vibe and the latter for seeing Tom Cruise die a bazillion times. |

I truly enjoy Science Fiction movies and books. Which makes me wonder why I don't play Science Fiction games. Somehow they just don't grab me. My favorite films are Forbidden Planet and War of the Worlds. And no, Terrement, I have no love at all for An Inconvenient Truth. |
DyeHard | 17 Nov 2014 8:32 a.m. PST |
I hate to pick favorites, But: "La citι des enfants perdus" or "The City of Lost Children" link DO NOT watch the English dubbed version, just read the subtitles, as the voices are not at all good. Now this is more of a fantasy then straight Sci/Fi but between the brain floating in a tank:
And the Cyborgs:
There are many Sci/Fi elements. As a word or warning, I also love Dune and even Zardoz. And I found "Starship Trooper" one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. If you like "Forbidden Planet" (which I very much do) check out: "Robinson Crusoe on Mars" imdb.com/title/tt0058530 and, "Planet of the Vampires" link And for pure robot enjoyment watch the Russian film "Planeta Bur" link |
Paint it Pink | 17 Nov 2014 8:42 a.m. PST |
I watch a lot of movies, even did film studies back in the day, so I find it difficult to choose one film. Alien scared the out of me, and the look is unique. Aliens was all trash talk banter goodness. Blade Runner noir at its finest. The Fifth Element despite its cheesy elements. Forbidden Planet, blew my mind when I saw it age 11 or so. Galaxy Quest, probably the best Star Trek movie that never was. The Matrix, awesome movie. Predator gotta have me some fun. Robocop biting satire. Soldier stripped down basic story of what it means to kill. Stargate for its von Daniken take on the world. Starship Troopers cheesy alien killing goodness. Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, the best ST movie ever made. Star Wars first trilogy space opera at its grandest. The Terminator and T2: Judgement Day rocked my world. John Carpenter's The Thing for its cosmic horror. All of these vie for number one, all are rather long in the tooth, but I've watched them all more times than I can care to remember, which for me is proof that they're worth watching more than once. Next generation stuff would include Avatar, Battle for Los Angeles, Edge of Tomorrow, District 9. |
Martin Rapier | 17 Nov 2014 8:42 a.m. PST |
"And I found "Starship Trooper" one of the funniest movies I have ever seen." Goodness, how could I forget ST. I laughed out loud in the cinema when I saw it, and numerous times since watching it on TV. Fabulous satire. In a similar vein, although more obviously 'comedy', Galaxy Quest. Does the rolling help? I could add Brasil to the list too of course. And that is the trouble with picking one favourite sci fi film, there are just so many. As we seem to be allowed horror too, then obviously Carpenters 'The Thing' as well as the Jeff Goldblum 'The Fly'. |
Bill Rosser | 17 Nov 2014 8:45 a.m. PST |
Them, Invaders from Mars (original) and Aliens. Them because it was the first Sci-Fi movie I ever remember seeing. Invaders from Mars scared the crap out of me as a kid, and Aliens just because it was awesome. |

1. Blade Runner I have seen it many times, usually the theatrical cut. 2. Ghost in the Shell Mamoru Oshii's 1995 cyberpunk masterpiece. 3. Dark City Alex Proyas' 1998 homage to film noir and German expressionism. I would like to give Metropolis (dir. Fritz Lang, 1927) a special mention. I have only seen it once, but it sticks in my mind, and I will undoubtedly see it again. Besides, had it never existed, it is unlikely that any of my top three would even be here. Ron P.S. It seems that my list has a distinctly urban tendency. |

Lots of excellent science fiction movies out there, but for me personally I would say my top pick is "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (the original 1950 version, not that awful remake). Honorable mention would have to go to Forbidden Planet, Battle L.A., Shape of Things to Come (1936), War of the Worlds (1953), Destination Moon (1950) and the original Star Wars trilogy. |
Tiger73 | 17 Nov 2014 9:44 a.m. PST |
