…Combat Mission To The Persian Gulf. "The U.S. Navy has deployed on a command ship in the Persian Gulf its first laser weapon capable of destroying a target. The amphibious transport ship USS Ponce has been patrolling with a prototype 30-kilowatt-class Laser Weapon System since late August, according to officials. The laser is mounted facing the bow, and can be fired in several modes -- from a dazzling warning flash to a destructive beam -- and can set a drone or small boat on fire. The Ponce "provides a unique platform" to deploy the new capability "in an operationally relevant region," Vice Admiral John Miller, the 5th Fleet commander, said in an e-mailed statement. The ship is the 5th Fleet's primary command and control afloat staging base for operations…"

All the crew has to be on deck and yell "PEW! PEW!" for it to work.:) |

I have seen the demonstration video of this weapon vs drone and small boats. It seem to take quite a bit of time to disable its targets. I think I would rather have a phalanx. Other than to say "look what I have" I don't see the point. |

Better range than the Phalanx, and someone seems to be thinking that the dwell time gives them a less-lethal option compared to the Phalanx. But an IR-frequency laser is a really lousy choice on the water, as water vapor greatly attenuates the beam. Something up in the visible or UV range would be much better. |

Based on the demo I saw, there is a visible component, as you could see it sparkle on the drones camera. I think you are right on "dwell time" that it serves as a warning shot. |

Sounds like a waste of time and energy. Phalanx is good enough. Maybe they should spend some these resources trying to get the equally pointless new systems on USS Ronald Reagan work or maybe giving those LCS' some teeth. |
