what is the difference between the squared & round bridge versions of the USS Cleveland? most pics I have seen,I can not tell the difference. which version was the Cleveland? what were the names of the round bridge? the names of the squared bridge? I look forward to your replies & help |

The two photos at the top of this page show it quite well. link The early Clevelands had a bridge that formed a semi-circle at the front. The later ones had a rectangular bridge, with open wings. The names of the class, and which were which type, is also on this page (handy....) As the lead ship, Cleveland had the early rounded bridge. The squared one was a later redesign, primarily to improve visibility for AA spotters. Dom. |

Square things are a little easier to fabricate as well, which speeds construction. The Fletcher class destroyers went from round to square, and the classes that succeeded both the Clevelands and the Fletchers kept the square bridges. |
