I am struggling to get my head round the OP14 Rules. Are there any commercial rules out there for that level of game? I already have GWSHII for division/corps level games and am looking for rules where, for instance, 4 bases of figures (I use Irregular Miniatures 6mm bases) represent a brigade or even a division for very large battles. Perhaps this is really too abstract for gaming with figures and is more like a board game? |

I imagine there is a DBA variant for WWI. You don't have to restrict yourself to 12 stands; you can use as many as you want. Volley and Bayonet would work (they use regimental size stands and brigade size stands). I know there is a RCW variant for Volley and Bayonet on the web somewhere, or you can make up your own. I think either option would do well for large WWI battles. Some people will think it is too abstract, so they don't have to play. |

Hi A few years ago I wrote a supplement for Piquet which has two scales. A 4 stand unit representing either a corps or division. You need Piquet to play. link Cheers Mark |

Op14 is less complicated than it appears. If you want to do proper operational games rather than just do big battles then try using "Not Quite Mechanised". It's intended for early WW2, but works for WW1 as well. |

Many thanks for the replies. Perhaps, considering what Trebian has mentioned, I should clarify that it is indeed large battles I want to play. |

There are plenty of one base = one battalion sets which you could use for big WW1 games. Horse, Foot & Guns (the 1914 end), the WW1 version of Volley & Bayonet, Megablitz works OK for WW1, there are some WW1 DBA and HoTT variants. I did a WW1 version of Fire & Fury using brigades as the basic unit, which also worked OK. I also wrote a very simple set to do Cambrai with, fourteen divisions engaged (plus lots of toy tanks of course). It partly depends which era/front you are interested in and what level of engagement. High intensity trench warfare is a very different kettle of fish from 1914 western front, 1915 eastern front, the Mespotamian Campaign, or the fighting from August 1918 onwards. I've found OP14 only really works for 1914 and 1918 (plus some of the desert and eastern front stuff). If you want to do the Somme or Verdun, you'll need something else. |

Would Square Bashing from Peter Pig work? |

Too low level, you can mainly manage a division, a corps at most. |

Howdy, Both, The Death of Glory – France 1914 and Great War East -1914 scenario books from Test of Battle Games contain a mini-campaign scenario to introduce operational battle. The former contains a Lorraine scenario, and the latter contains an East Prussia (Tannenberg) scenario. The playtest of the Tannenberg game was the subject of a number of posts here on TMP. Ponder on, JAS
