OK, so i spray varnished a load of Planetfall models with army painter spray anti shine matt. This frosted the models, i knew this was a potential outcome and had read theat re varnishing with a brush on remedies this. Wether the frosting was operator error or product doesnt matter, it happened. When i brushed on the army painter anti shine matt "paint/varnish" the models were instantly de-frosted. left these to dry over night and this morning looking at the models in some places noticably in a few crevices there is white/off white which i imagine is too much varnish "pooling" and drying this way? I didnt think there was any problem with brush on varnish. Has anyone else done this? and/or know if i can re-brush on varnish to remedy this white stuff again ? cheers Rees |

This might be useless advice for you as I don't know the varnish, but I'd leave it a week before you do anything. It might just take a while to dry out / clear. Paint and varnish does strange things, sometimes. BTW, I strongly advise you drop spray varnishing – the time saved is often small in comparison to the problems caused, especially when you already put all the painting work in. |

Hi olicana, Thanks for the advice i will leave them alone for a week or so , i only need to flock the bases, so that can wait. Yeah, now i know that the brush on does the same thing as the antishine matt spray, my days of spray varnishing are over i think. It was only teh third time i had used teh spray varnish , and the first time i used the brush on varnish, suppose you just cant beat experience of using a product. |

There are, to my mind, a couple of things about a spray paint that you can never be sure of. You can't be sure that atmospheric conditions will not effect paint particles between nozzle and target. They do with undercoating, but as this is first coat it is less of a problem. Brushing stuff in in your home is always very similar, so this variable is less of a problem. You can never be sure that you have mixed the paint properly. There is a "shake for X" instruction but you can't be sure because you can't see inside the tin. It is much more difficult to judge correct coverage especially on small areas – spray cans were designed for covering wide areas quickly not for tiny figures. I'll get slandered for this but, regardless of what producers might say, spray cans were made for big area coverage, not small figures. It's not the stuff in the tin which I'm sure the sellers have taken time and trouble to find (I don't know, but I doubt they developed it), it's the tin and delivery method. Just because it is being sold don't expect………… Except for undercoating and BIG terrain work, I would always avoid spray paints and varnishes. BTW. I paint figures for a living. I paint in enamels. |

I'm in the US. What brush-on matt varnishes do you recommend? |

I'd recommend Cryla Soluble Matt Varish. It is white spirit based and works best slightly thinned. |

I use Testors Dullcote brush on. Used it for years. Great stuff! Thanks, John |

Hi olicana, I too paint in enamels but have been looking for a brush on matt black primer to use for years. What do you use? I have been using the Krylon Camo paints as a primer with generally good results but I agree with your comments about sprays. |

I have used Testor's Dullcote spray for 30 years and only once had the frosting issue. I wouldn't mess around with brush varnish any more than would I mess around with brush primer. Each to his own I guess. |

Hi ID, I tend to use Plastikote spray on but I've yet to find any spray that gives a uniform coat in all weathers and conditions. Mostly, spray painting undercoat is fine but every so often it isn't – usually without rhyme or reason. Fortunately, it's at the start of the process so little, except time, is lost. I never use spray on varnish – having come a cropper, when all the work has been done, in the past. |

olicana, thanks but do you use a brush on black primer to touch up after you use the Plastikote spray. |
