Like many, I love Age of Sail rules. Sadly I don't have time to do minis justice. So I have decided to go in the opposite direction with the el cheapo Card Ships!

The sea mat is from GW'S Dreadfleet game. |

Those are great! I was looking for such a thing just yesterday evening. Where did you get them? |
Only Warlock | 13 Nov 2014 9:27 a.m. PST |
Those are Pirates of the Spanish Main collectible ships from whizkids. You can usually pick them up super cheap on ebay and amazon. All these ships cost me about $5. USD |

Great, thanks! I saw something similar yesterday but I was not able to get the name. Now to do a little searching… |

I hit all the edges except the sails with a sharpie marker. Makes a big difference.i might take some black thread and try rigging one as a test. |

I hit all the edges except the sails with a sharpie marker Sounds like a good idea – must try that. I don't know what a sharpie marker is but I guess it's a black marker pen in UK terms. I've got lots of these ships – what rules are you using? Something simple as in Sails of Glory would be good. edit: I just reread the OP – and Age of Sails are the rules – doh..! Nevertheless, I'm interested in what they are like and any suggestions for a simple set if AofS is not them Doug |

I use "Kiss Me Hardy" by TFL and "Trafalgar" by GW. Occasionally "Pieces of Eight" by RFCM. |

Sharpie Markers are nice heavy permanent ink markers that work on just about any surface. |

Actually I meant Age of Sail in the generic sense. Although I do own the rules. |

So, Age of Sails is not a rules set? Of those you mention, which are the simplest? Doug |

Looks nice, I like that gaming mat. I have several of those old Pirates of the Spanish Main ships; many of them have never been built. |

Sadly I have gone this same route for much the same reasons. I have over 100 of the Wizkids card ships. I say sadly because I also have about 60 of Tumbling Dices sailing ships and another 30 of the sailing ships from the old Demonworld Empires game which I just cant seem to get around to painting. Really like the smaller metal ships but the Wizkid ones work and really look good on the table. I even made a couple ships of my own (an HMS Warrior/1860 ironclad) in this style out of plastic card. |

Oh it is, just not what I meant. Kiss Me Hardy is probably the simplest and it's also a lot of fun! |

Warlock- I did the same thing about a year back. I have tons of the Card ships so I went through and matched up as many historic orders of battle as I could with ships. We use Trafalgar from GW so I made up ship cards for each. Nice idea about the edges. Thx Clif |

I don't know what a sharpie marker is but I guess it's a black marker pen in UK terms. "Sharpie" is a brand name for marker pens. You can get them in Wilkinsons, WH Smiths and Hobbycraft (and possibly other outlets) in the UK. |

No wonder I didn't recognise the name – I eschew the cult of labels Doug |

Sharpies are old school. For many years in the US the term Sharpie was a term used as shorthand for very black indelible marker. They have been everywhere in the US for at least 40 years. |

I recently found a stack of unassembled ships in my attic. I purchased them for general wargaming as well, but the rules they came with weren't too bad for a friendly game of pushing sailing ships around. |
